Stored rice was collected from rice processing complexes of National Agricultural Cooperative Federation of 11 regions in Korea to evaluate the occurrence of fungi and bacteria and to identify the predominant fungi and bacteria to the genus levels. Most rice samples generally produced the higher levels of fungi and bacteria than white rice. The occurrence of fungi and bacteria varied in various...

The temperate phage 59 from Erwinia carotovora and its DNA were studied. The phage particles have an icosahedral head and a long noncontractile tail with a base plate. The virus DNA makes up 50% of the total virus and exists as a linear molecule (molecular weight, 2.6 X 10(7)). A model of virus structural organization is presented.

In early studies using high dosages of Escherichia coli asparaginase (10 doses of 1000 ID/kg each) for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, hepatotoxicity was a major com plication of therapy. Biochemical evidence of hepatic dysfunction occurred in 75% of patients during the first 2 weeks of treatment. Currently, the use of lower dosages of E. coli asparaginase (three doses of 6000 ID...

Insects are major vectors of plant and animal disease, and bacterial phytopathogens are often disseminated by flies. We have previously reported that some isolates of the phytopathogenic bacterial species Erwinia carotovora infect Drosophila and activate an immune response. Using a genetic screen, we have now identified two genes that are required by E. carotovora to infect Drosophila. One of t...
