Learning Geographic Information from a Map and Text: Learning Environment and Individual Differences
A map is frequently combined with a text to provide spatial and non-spatial information for learners. How a map and a text are combined and the characteristics of learners are keys for understanding successful learning. This study used a cognitive experiment to investigate spatial learning by explaining performance on a test of acquired knowledge with variables related to the learning environme...
Turbo Equalization of the Faster-Than-Nyquist Signaling Using the Reduced-Complexity Z-MAP Algorithm
In this paper, the performance of the Z-MAP algorithmis explored in the context of the turbo equalization of thefaster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signals. The complexity of the Z-MAP,in terms of the number of the surviving states at each time epoch,is studied. Finally, the performance of the Z-MAP is comparedto that of the backup M-BCJR for turbo equalizing the FTNsignals.
This paper presents an overview of the GBGen system, a sentence realizer currently developped for French. The system is strictly deterministic, i.e. it maps semantic structures to surface forms without either simulating parallelism or using backtracking, and the performances are accordingly extremely satisfying. It is procedural, based on Government & Binding Theory (Chomsky 1981): several leve...
The biometrics authentication systems take attentions to cover the weakness of password authentication system. In this paper, we focus attention on the multi modal-biometrics of behavior characteristics. For the integration of multi modal biometrics, some variations of Self Organizing maps and its incremental learning method for implementing adaptive authentication system are implemented and th...
Chaotic systems exhibit highly nonlinear, complex and unpredictable behaviors. Thereby, these systems have received much attention in a variety of fields over the past few decades. In this paper we develop a particle filter algorithm to solve the problem of chaotic state and unknown input estimation from arbitrarily nonlinear time series. Thus, even if there exist Gaussian or non-Gaussian noise...
A novel idea of using giant magnetostrictive material (GMM) based actuators for journal bearing control is presented in this paper. Frequency response tests on GMM actuators and a journal bearing system were examined. The performances of the system running at various journal shaft rotational speeds under control were investigated. With the aid of GMM actuators, the performances on journal shaft...
The assessment of second language (L2) speaking has long been an important yet challenging area of research in language testing. L2 testers are often concerned with designing authentic speaking tasks that resemble real-life speaking activities so that score interpretations are generalizable to non-test contexts. The conversational nature of speaking skills has promoted the widespread integratio...
Edge detection plays a significant role in image processing and performance of high-level tasks such as image segmentation and object recognition depends on its efficiency. It is clear that accurate edge map generation is more difficult when images are corrupted with noise. Moreover, most of edge detection methods have parameters which must be set manually. Here we propose a new color edge dete...
Research on performance measurement in humanitarian supply chains is scant. Experiences with developing performance measures in commercial environments show that it is particularly important to understand linkages between higher level goals and performance measurement, for example through using strategy maps in for-profit organisations or mission maps in non-profit organisations. In this articl...
Standard compilers are incapable of fully harnessing the enormous performance potential of Blue Gene systems. To reach the leading position in the Top500 supercomputing list, IBM had to put considerable effort into coding and tuning a limited range of low-level numerical kernel routines by hand. In this paper the Vienna MAP compiler is presented, which particularly targets signal transform code...
