Congenital absence of the pericardium is a rare cardiac malformation and is most often asymptomatic. It is usually discovered as an incidental finding. Physical examination, chest radiography, and electrocardiogram are often unremarkable. Echocardiography provides valuable information, and sometimes computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging is needed for subsequent confirmation.

A 71-year-old male presented with atypical chest pain and dilatation of the right ventricle on echocardiography and was referred for cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) for suspected arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. CMR showed marked posterior and leftward displacement of the heart, with the apex extending to the left lateral chest wall. Spin echo imaging showed thin perica...

Left ventricular pressure and segment length were measured in seven conscious chronically instrumented dogs with the pericardium intact and 3-9 days after pericardiectomy. Diastolic pressure-length plots were obtained under control conditions and after acute volume loading followed by sodium nitroprusside infusion. In all dogs with intact pericardium, volume loading displaced the entire diastol...

It is perhaps not sufficiently widely realized that secondary tumours of the heart and pericardium are fairly commonly found at necropsy although they are rarely causes of clinical heart disease. It was thought worth while, therefore, to review the clinical records of cases of metastatic tumours of the heart and pericardium found at necropsy to see what evidence of their presence such tumours h...

BACKGROUND To report a case with hypotony due to late leakage of the filtering bleb performed during childhood and treated surgically using human pericardium graft. CASE PRESENTATION A man with hypotony related to bleb's leakage in his right eye was presented. During his childhood trabeculectomy was performed to manage ocular hypertension due to pediatric glaucoma. Biomicroscopy revealed chor...

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis is a systemic disease resulting in necrotizing vasculitis of small- and medium-sized vessels. Cardiac involvement is rare and when present usually manifests with pericarditis and coronary artery vasculitis. We report here a case of granulomatosis with polyangiitis involving the native coronary arteries, bypass graft, and pericardium with interesting imaging find...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of gamma irradiation on glutaraldehyde-fixed bovine pericardium. METHOD Glutaraldehyde-fixed bovine pericardium was exposed to gamma radiation (doses from 0 to 10000 Gy). Six samples from each of nine groups were evaluated by optic microscopy, and shrinking and mechanical tests and the denaturation temperature was determined. Additionally, they were subcutaneo...

To elucidate the pathophysiology of severe right ventricular infarction (RVI), isolated RVI was produced in 15 dogs with the pericardium intact or open. After RVI in dogs with the pericardium intact, RV systolic pressure decreased by 27%, aortic pressure by 29% and cardiac output by 34%. RV transmural pressure, RV end-diastolic size and intrapericardial pressure increased, left ventricular tran...

urulent pericarditis caused by Staphylococcus aureus is an infrequent complication of infections originating in another body location. It is typically an acute and often catastrophic illness. In this report a 23-year-old man presented to accident and emergency department with fever, productive cough and chest pain of 5 days duration, followed by shortness of breath. Chest x-ray showed air fluid...
