Serious complications of pneumococcal pneumonia have become uncommon with effective antibiotic treatment. Purulent pericarditis is a rare though well described complication of untreated pneumococcal sepsis. A case of untreated pneumococcal pneumonia complicated by purulent pericarditis is described. This presented as an out of hospital asystolic cardiopulmonary arrest.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is an important pathogenic bacteria causing pneumonia and invasive pneumococcal diseases, the vaccination for recommended in patients with RA other autoimmune disorders. Compared immunocompetent individuals, frequency mortality rate were higher patients. The effect of may not be weakened people using corticosteroid biological disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD...

Acute exacerbation is a frequent complication of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Recent studies suggested a role for bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae in the development of acute exacerbation. For this study, we investigated the following in COPD patients: (i) the epidemiology of pneumococcal colonization and infection, (ii) the effect of pneumococcal colonization on the d...

Pneumococcal peritonitis is prevalent in children and adults with comorbidities but extremely rare in healthy adults. Here we describe a case of pneumococcal peritonitis in a previously healthy woman with no known risk factors who presented with constipation, abdominal pain, and distention. Her only past medical history was an uncomplicated C-section two months prior to presentation. A laparoto...

UNLABELLED The use of pneumococcal capsular polysaccharide (PPS)-based vaccines has resulted in a substantial reduction in invasive pneumococcal disease. However, much remains to be learned about vaccine-mediated immunity, as seven-valent PPS-protein conjugate vaccine use in children has been associated with nonvaccine serotype replacement and 23-valent vaccine use in adults has not prevented p...

INTRODUCTION Streptococcus pneumoniae is an uncommon etiologic agent in soft-tissue infections. CASE PRESENTATION We report the case of a 35-year-old Caucasian woman who presented to our facility with puerperal pneumococcal mastitis, and review the only other three cases of pneumococcal mastitis described in the medical literature. CONCLUSIONS The roles of the various pneumococcal vaccines ...

Three years after a 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine was replaced by a 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in the Netherlands, we observed a decrease in incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes 1, 5, and 7F. Our data do not support or exclude cross-protection against serotype 19A.

OBJECTIVE To analyse the direct medical costs and effectiveness of vaccinating adults aged between 18 and 64 years and elderly persons > or = 65 years of age with the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine. DESIGN AND SETTING This was a decision-analytic modelling study from the societal perspective in Belgium. The analysis compared 'vaccination' with 'no vaccination and treatment'. ...

INTRODUCTION England and Wales recently replaced the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) with its 13-valent equivalent (PCV13), partly based on projections from mathematical models of the long-term impact of such a switch compared to ceasing pneumococcal conjugate vaccination altogether. METHODS A compartmental deterministic model was used to estimate parameters governing transmiss...
