BACKGROUND Fatty acids in breast-milk such as docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid, commonly known as DHA and ARA, contribute to the healthy development of children in various ways. However, the manufactured versions that are added to infant formula might not have the same health benefits as those in breast-milk. There is evidence that the manufactured additives might cause harm to infants...

We introduce the draft genome sequences of five enterotoxigenic Bacillus cereus strains: Bc 12, Bc 67, Bc 111, Bc 112, and Bc 113, which were obtained from powdered infant formula. The genome sizes of the strains ranged from 5.5 to 5.8 Mb, and the G+C contents were ~35.2%.

Cronobacter is an opportunistic pathogen associated with meningitis in neonates. Based on long-term surveillance of a powdered infant formula production facility, a persistent and thermotolerant isolate, denoted Cronobacter sakazakii SP291, was detected. Here we report the complete genome along with the sequences of three plasmids identified in this organism.

Cronobacter sakazakii is a food-borne pathogenic bacterium that may cause severe illness in neonates and the elderly. We present the genome sequence of a rare strain (ST40, CC45), commonly found in multiple food processing facilities and in powdered infant formula and only indicted in a single clinical case.

An ultrasonic technique was used to compare gastric emptying after a feed of expressed breast milk and formula milk in a blind, cross over study of preterm infants. Fourteen infants (median gestational age 33 weeks) were studied on 46 occasions. Each infant received a nasogastric feed of either expressed breast milk or formula milk, and the alternative at the next feed. Real time ultrasound ima...

Bifidobacteria is a well known bacteria that is found in abundance in the intestine of infants which provides several health and nutritional benefits. Realizing the many benefits of bifidobacteria to human, this study has been conducted with the objective to determine the growth promotional effect of different types of milk and milk proteins on Bifidobacterium species. One strains of Bifiodobac...

This is the first report of the draft genome sequence of an Enterobacter species that may have been transmitted from powdered infant formula (PIF) to infants, resulting in illness. Enterobacter spp. are currently permitted in PIF, but the transmission of this strain indicates that the microbiological criteria for PIF may need revision.

OBJECTIVE To explore whether feeding only directly from the breast in the first 24-48 h of life increases the proportion of infants receiving any breast milk at 6 months. DESIGN A prospective cohort study. SETTING Three maternity hospitals in Melbourne, Australia. PARTICIPANTS 1003 postpartum English-speaking women with a healthy singleton term infant, who intended to breast feed, were re...

Data are presented on faecal water losses in 93 preterm infants being fed breast milk (72 infant days) or formula (280 days). Losses per kg increased to 4 weeks, when they amounted to 11% of water requirement in infants fed breast milk and 8% in infants fed formula.
