Proportional Fairness (PF) is known to achieve a good trade-off between efficiency and fairness by an opportunistic allocation of resources to users with good radio conditions, without sacrificing fairness towards the other users of the system who have worse radio conditions. On the other hand, Hierarchical Modulation (HM) is a means to increase the spectral efficiency of a given system by supe...

As flows of traffic traverse a network, they share with other flows a variety of resources such as links, buffers and router CPUs in their path. Fairness is an intuitively desirable property in the allocation of resources in a network shared among flows of traffic from different users. While fairness in bandwidth allocation over a shared link has been extensively studied, overall end-to-end fai...

The authors present a precedence based bandwidth management and pricing proxy server for controlling Internet communication in an intelligent and adaptive manner. Both proportional fairness and congestion avoidance flow control treatments are examined. The proposed proxy server is designed to alleviate Internet congestion and apply priority and incentive based Internet usage and pricing.

We propose a new EPON MAC protocol guaranteeing fairness among users by allocating excess bandwidth proportional to their subscription rates. The novelty of the protocol is in the use of scalable per-subscription-rate-queuing with round-robin scheduling and packet reclassification at ONU. 2000 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (060.4250) Networks

The performance of opportunistic beamforming might be degraded if the number of users is small. This paper proposes an adaptive opportunistic beamforming technique for orthogonal frequency division multiple access systems, which can produce good results even with a small number of users. This paper also proposes a modified proportional fairness scheduling algorithm, which can further improve th...

The authors present the design of precedence based bandwidth management and pricing extensions to proxy server software for controlling Internet communication in an intelligent and adaptive manner. Proportional fairness and congestion avoidance disciplines are examined as flow control mechanism. The proposed proxy server is designed to preemptively alleviate Internet congestion.
