Abstract Background: in this study, two proton beam delivery designs, i.e. passive scattering therapy (PSPT) and pencil scanning (PBS), were quantitatively compared terms of dosimetric indices. The GATE Monte Carlo (MC) particle transport code was used to simulate the system; developed simulation engines benchmarked with respect experimental measurements. Method: a water phantom system energy p...
Purpose The purpose of this work is to (a) demonstrate the feasibility delivering a spread-out Bragg peak (SOBP) proton beam in ultra-high dose rate (FLASH) using therapy synchrocyclotron as major step toward realizing an experimental platform for preclinical studies, and (b) evaluate response four models ionization chambers such radiation field. Methods A clinical Mevion HYPERSCAN® was adjuste...
Effects of fabrication conditions on the double-peak structure observed in fiber Bragg gratings at harmonics of the Bragg wavelength were investigated, showing that slight variations in the alignment of the phase mask can affect the grating spectra significantly. A single peak occurs only when the incident beam direction is perfectly normal with respect to the fiber.
Radio-sensitization with gold nanoparticles (GNPs) is a relatively recent advancement of radiotherapy that determined to increase radiation in the target tumor region. Monte Carlo (MC) simulation well-known method has gained popularity by assisting determining effective dose various tumors. Assessing concentration particles during proton therapy can provide key evaluating efficiency performed t...
introduction today, there is a growing interest in the use of hadrontherapy as an advanced radiotherapy technique. hadrontherapy is considered a promising tool for cancer treatment, given its high radiobiological effectiveness and high accuracy of dose deposition due to the physical properties of hadrons. however, new radiation modalities of dose delivery and on-line beam monitoring play crucia...
Acquisition of quasi-monoenergetic ("pristine") depth-dose curves is an essential task in the frame of commissioning and quality assurance of a proton therapy treatment head. For pencil beam scanning delivery modes this is often accomplished by measuring the integral ionization in a plane perpendicular to the axis of an unscanned beam. We focus on the evaluation of three integral detectors: two...
Unlike proton therapy, conventional radiation therapy directs X-rays not only at the tumor but also unavoidably at nearby healthy tissue. Protons deliver radiation to tumor tissue while the healthy structures will be spared during proton therapy. When protons travel through matter, secondary particles like neutrons and photons are produced. It is believed that the secondary dose can lead to sec...
background: in radiation treatment of moving targets located in thorax region of patient body, the delivered dose does not match with the planned treatment, resulting in some over and under dosage in the tumor volume, as a function of motion magnitude and frequency. several efforts have been done to investigate the target motion effects on dose distribution in the target and surrounding normal ...
This master thesis is a continuation of previous work done at Elekta Instrument AB for the joint objective of developing the Monte Carlo simulation program, Pegasos, for proton therapy. For this purpose, neutron transport with nuclear interactions has been implemented into the Pegasos framework. Nuclear data is provided from the TALYS nuclear code and for neutron-hydrogen nuclear interactions, ...
