High-throughput (HT) methodologies have had a tremendous impact on structural biology of soluble proteins. High-resolution structure determination relies on the ability of the macromolecule to form ordered crystals that diffract X-rays. While crystallization remains somewhat empirical, for a given protein, success is proportional to the number of conditions screened and to the number of variant...
We show that the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data of WMAP can give subelectronvolt limit on the neutrino mass: mν < 0.63 eV (95% CL). We also investigate its degeneracy with other cosmological parameters. In particular, we show the Hubble constant derived from the WMAP data decreases considerably when the neutrino mass is a few times 0.1 eV.
Many of our students seem to have well-defined but not necessarily well-founded opinions on the biological effects of ionizing radiation. During discussions of nuclear transformations in introductory chemistry and physics courses we might be able to help these students better understand the magnitude of these effects, and perhaps sort out the plethora of units with which radiation measurements ...
A report on the 11th International Conference on Biology and Synchrotron Radiation, which took place on 8-11 September 2013, in Hamburg, Germany, is presented.
We have investigated the deviation from the standard recombination process, using the ACBAR 2008 and the WMAP 3 year data. In this investigation, we have considered the possibility of the accelerated recombination as well as the delayed recombination. We find that the accelerated recombination is as likely as the delayed recombination, and there is some degeneracy between ǫα and {ns, log[10 As]...
Many people are trying to be smarter every day. How's about you? There are many ways to evoke this case you can find knowledge and lesson everywhere you want. However, it will involve you to get what call as the preferred thing. When you need this kind of sources, the following book can be a great choice. effects of ionizing radiation on dna physical chemical and biological aspects molecular bi...
An International Congress of Radiation Research convenes every 4 years. The 10th such congress was held in the German city of Wlrzburg, between August 27 and September 1, 1995. This meeting was especially notable, for both historical and scientific reasons. It was aptly held in the city where 100 years previously, one of the seminal scientific discoveries was made by Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen, the...

By the time of his death on 23 November 2012, Michael (Mike) E. Robbins had gained a national and, indeed, international , reputation as a leader in the fi eld of radiation-induced normal tissue eff ects. For the fi nal decade or so of his career, Mike had been based at Wake Forest Medical Center, an institution where he had developed a world-class research program looking at the prevention and...
The use of ionizing radiation in cardiovascular imaging has generated considerable discussion. Radiation should not be considered in isolation, but rather in the context of a careful examination of the benefits, risks, and costs of cardiovascular imaging. Such consideration requires an understanding of some fundamental aspects of the biology, physics, epidemiology, and terminology germane to ra...
