The tetrameric cytoplasmic [NiFe] hydrogenase (SH) of Ralstonia eutropha couples the oxidation of hydrogen to the reduction of NAD(+) under aerobic conditions. In the catalytic subunit HoxH, all six conserved motifs surrounding the [NiFe] site are present. Five of these motifs were altered by site-directed mutagenesis in order to dissect the molecular mechanism of hydrogen activation. Based on ...

Bacterial wilt caused by plant pathogenic Ralstonia spp. is one of the most important diseases affecting the production of many important crops worldwide. In China, a large scientific community has been dedicated to studying bacterial wilt and its causative agent, Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum and R. solanacearum. Most of their work was published in Chinese, which has hindered international comm...

Two clinical cases of infection with Ralstonia mannitolilytica are described: a recurrent meningitis on an implanted intraventricular catheter and an infected hemoperitoneum as a complication of a cholangiocarcinoma. The strains were first misidentified as Pseudomonas fluorescens and Burkholderia cepacia. Further testing lead to the identification as Ralstonia pickettii biovar 3/"thomasii," whi...

The Actinomycetales bacteria Rhodococcus opacus PD630 and Rhodococcus jostii RHA1 bioconvert a diverse range of organic substrates through lipid biosynthesis into large quantities of energy-rich triacylglycerols (TAGs). To describe the genetic basis of the Rhodococcus oleaginous metabolism, we sequenced and performed comparative analysis of the 9.27 Mb R. opacus PD630 genome. Metabolic-reconstr...

PhiRSB1 is a wide-host-range, T7-like bacteriophage that infects and efficiently lyses the phytopathogenic bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum. The phiRSB1 genome comprises 43,079 bp of double-stranded DNA (61.7% G+C) with 325-bp terminal repeats and contains 47 open reading frames. Strong activity of tandem early promoters and wide specificity of phage promoters of phiRSB1 were demonstrated.

ABSTRACT To characterize host genes required for a compatible interaction, we identified a novel recessive Arabidopsis thaliana mutant, nws1 (no wilt symptoms), that failed to develop wilt symptoms in response to virulent strains of the phytopathogenic bacterium, Ralstonia solanacearum. The absence of wilting in nws1 plants was not correlated with a cell death phenotype or a constitutive expres...

Strain ICMP-8657 was formerly taxonomically classified as Burkholderia glumae and reported to be the producer of an antibacterial pyrazole derivative. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of ICMP-8657, which failed to demonstrate the biosynthetic capacity to produce the stated antibacterial compound, leading to its taxonomic reclassification as Ralstonia pickettii ICMP-8657.

The genome of Ralstonia solanacearum CaRs_Mep, a race 4/biovar 3/phylotype I bacterium causing wilt in small cardamom and other Zingiberaceae plants, was sequenced. Analysis of the 5.7-Mb genome sequence will aid in better understanding of the genetic determinants of host range, host jump, survival, pathogenicity, and virulence of race 4 of R. solanacearum.

BACKGROUND Potting media are commonly used by growers in different parts of the world for potted plants, raising seedlings and for improving soil characteristics. This study was conducted to characterize bacterial communities occurring in 13 commercial potting media products originating from seven countries. FINDINGS Bacteria were isolated using serial dilution. Identification to the species ...
