The pathway and frequency of species' introductions can affect the extent, impact, and management of biological invasions. Here, we examine the pathway of introduction of the aquatic plant Cabomba caroliniana (fanwort) into Canada and the northern United States using plastid DNA sequence (intergenic spacers atpF-atpH, trnH-psbA, and trnL-trnF) and DNA content analyses. We test the hypothesis th...

In the experimental evolution of microbes such as Escherichia coli, many replicate populations are evolved from a common ancestor. Freezing a population sample supplemented with the cryoprotectant glycerol permits later analysis or restarting of an evolution experiment. Typically, each evolving population, and thus each sample archived in this way, consists of many unique genotypes and phenotyp...

By characterizing the geographic and functional spectrum of human genetic variation, the 1000 Genomes Project aims to build a resource to help to understand the genetic contribution to disease. Here we describe the genomes of 1,092 individuals from 14 populations, constructed using a combination of low-coverage whole-genome and exome sequencing. By developing methods to integrate information ac...

Short-term rates of chromosome evolution were analyzed in experimental populations of Escherichia coli B that had been propagated for 2,000 generations under four thermal regimens. Chromosome alterations were monitored in 24 independent populations by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of DNA treated with five rare-cutting restriction enzymes. A total of 11 changes, 8 affecting chromosome size an...

Predicting population dynamics for rare species is of paramount importance in order to evaluate the likelihood of extinction and planning conservation strategies. However, evaluating and predicting population viability can be hindered from a lack of data. Rare species frequently have small populations, so estimates of vital rates are often very uncertain due to lack of data. We evaluated the vi...

Sex allocation theory predicts that facultative maternal investment in the rare sex should be favoured by natural selection when breeders experience predictable variation in adult sex ratios (ASRs). We found significant spatial and predictable interannual changes in local ASRs within a natural population of the common lizard where the mean ASR is female-biased, thus validating the key assumptio...

Extraventricular neurocytomas (EVNs) are rare neuronal tumors included in the definition of neoplasms in the 2007 World Health Organization classification of tumors of the central nervous system. Although a small case series of EVNs in adults has been previously reported, EVNs in pediatric populations are extremely rare. The current case report presents the clinicopathological features of an EV...

The ability to attract sufficient resources to effectively develop therapeutics for rare diseases is a daunting task. This review summarizes existing resources for rare diseases and discusses some of the challenges and strategies associated with developing therapies for small patient populations with an emphasis on pachyonychia congenita.

Cystic fibrosis is a life-shortening multisystem genetic disease. While readily tested, few tests analyze rare gene mutations prevalent among ethnic minorities. This case of a Hispanic child with a rare CF-causing c.233dupT mutation and severe disease emphasizes the need for broad CFTR mutation analyses and genotyping particularly in minority populations.
