Using high spatial resolution Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 and Advance Camera for Surverys imaging of resolved stellar populations, we constrain the contribution of thermally-pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) stars and red helium burning (RHeB) stars to the 1.6 μm nearinfrared (NIR) luminosities of 23 nearby galaxies, including dwarfs and spirals. The TP-AGB phase contribut...

We present the first subarcsecond-resolution images at multiple mid-IR wavelengths of the thermallyemitting dust around the A0 star HD 32297. Our observations with T-ReCS at Gemini South reveal a nearly edge-on resolved disk at both 11.7 μm and 18.3 μm that extends ∼150 AU in radius. The mid-IR is the third wavelength region in which this disk has been resolved, following coronagraphic observat...

The high infrared quantum yield, continuous absorption spectrum, and band edge tunability of colloidal quantum dots (QD) has opened up new opportunities to use luminescent down shifting for multispectral imaging in the infrared. We demonstrate a QD sensitized short wavelength infrared (SWIR) camera which is capable of UV-SWIR multispectral imaging. The application of multispectral cameras for U...

The fundamentally sound non-Equilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) approach provides the theoretical basis for NEMO 1-D as the first nanoelectronic TCAD tool. Effects of quantum charging, bandstructure and incoherent scattering from alloy disorder, interface roughness, acoustic phonons, and polar optical phonons are modeled. Engineers and experimentalists who desire a black-box design tool as well...

Software Quality Engineering is an emerging discipline that is concerned with improving the approach to software quality. It is important that this discipline be firmly rooted in a quality model satisfying its needs. In order to define the needs of this discipline, the meaning of quality is broadly defined by reviewing the literature on the subject. Software Quality Engineering needs a quality ...

Wideband hyperspectral imaging (WHSI) systems simultaneously collect spectral and spatial imagery across a broad spectrum that includes the visible/near infrared (VNIR), short-wave infrared (SWIR), mid-wave infrared (MWIR), and long-wave infrared (LWIR) regimes. These passive optical systems capture reflected sunlight and thermal emissions from targets enabling the characterization of surface m...

A practical procedure and postprocessor FORTRAN program which sums strain energies for an aircraft structure, elastic element by elastic element for each component as outputted by MSC/NASTRAN Solution 103 or Solutions 145 and 146 is described and an example is provided showing an output table of strain energies for a hybrid finite element model of a twin turboprop aircraft and comparison with a...

“The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a graphical language for visualizing, specifying, constructing, and documenting the artifacts of a softwareintensive system” [1]. This panel of domain and tool development experts discusses the features needed to extend UML to support systems engineering, and together with the audience, investigates the advisability and feasibility of the extensions. Audi...

The principal motivation for organizing a panel session at DBSEC’08 was to invite a number of distinguished researchers in data security to present their thoughts and to stimulate conference debate on a question of major importance: what are the key future challenges in distributed data security? The thoughts of the panellists on this issue are summarized in this article. Steve Barker, the sess...
