The use of temperature-gradient analyzers for non-resonant high-resolution inelastic X-ray scattering is investigated. The gradient compensates for geometrical broadening of the energy resolution by adjusting the lattice spacing of the analyzer crystal. Applying a ∼ 12 mK temperature gradient across a 9.5 cm analyzer, resolutions of 0.75 (2) meV FWHM at 25.7 keV for Si(13 13 13) and 1.25(2) meV...

For a neutral (40)Ca-based optical frequency standard we report a fractional frequency instability of 4 x 10(-15) in 1 s, which represents a fivefold improvement over existing atomic frequency standards. Using the technique of optical Bordé-Ramsey spectroscopy with a sample of 10(7) trapped atoms, we have resolved linewidths as narrow as 200 Hz (FWHM). With colder atoms this system could potent...

We employ the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique as a numerical approach to studying the effects of scatterers' sizes on near-field coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy under tightly focused radially and linearly polarized light excitations. The FDTD results show that in a uniform medium (water), the full width at half maximum (FWHM) (transverse resolution) of rad...

We report emission from a bismuth doped chalcogenide glass which is flattened, has a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 600 nm, peaks at 1300 nm and covers the entire telecommunications window. At cryogenic temperatures the FWHM reaches 850 nm. The quantum efficiency and lifetime were as high as 32% and 175 mus, respectively. We also report two new bismuth emission bands at 2000 and 2600 nm. ...

We report a factor-of-6 shortening of the 240-ps (FWHM) pulses in a triple-pass, 2.5-atm CO(2) amplifier. This technique is based on the self-phase modulation of a 10-mum pulse in a plasma after the first pass of amplification, followed by narrowing of this chirped pulse during further amplification. Subsequently, strong power broadening provides the necessary bandwidth to amplify 40-ps pulses ...

Taking advantage of both the low-emittance proton beam of the cooler synchrotron COSY and the high momentum precision of the COSY-11 detector system, the mass distribution of the η' meson was measured with a resolution of 0.33  MeV/c2 (FWHM), improving the experimental mass resolution by almost an order of magnitude with respect to previous results. Based on the sample of more than 2300 reconst...

Intense laser emission has been observed from the KrF molecule formed by a chemical reaction initiated by fast-discharge circuitry. With a gas mixture of He:Kr:NF, = 500:50:1 and a sample pressure of 700 Torr, an output energy of 0. 8 mj was measured from a 25-nsec laser pulse (FWHM). Spectral analysis of the laser emission indicated laser action at 248.5 and 249.5 nm.

We describe a compact, tunable, optical time-delay module that functions by means of total internal reflection within two glass prisms. The delay is controlled by small mechanical motions of the prisms. The device is inherently extremely broad band, unlike time delay modules based on "slow light" methods. In the prototype device that we fabricated, we obtain time delays as large as 1.45 ns in a...

We report new observations of the H 2 O megamaser in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348. Following our initial detection in 2000 March using the Effelsberg 100 m telescope, re-analysis of previous data on this source indicates that the maser was present but only marginally detectable in late 1997. Monitoring through late 2000 shows that the maser has again decreased to its original level. The H 2 O l...

We have been successful in developing light and durable mirrors made of CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) laminates for the reflector of the new CANGAROO-II 7 m telescope. The reflector has a parabolic shape (F/1.1) with a 30 m effective area which consists of 60 small spherical mirrors of CFRP laminates. The orientation of each mirror can be remotely adjusted by stepping motors. After the...
