Orientogeochus rheinheimeri gen. et sp. n. is described and illustra¬ted from Luzon (the Philippines). The new genus differs the Afrogeochus in toothed femora, rounded eyes, widely separated procoxal cavities, subapically inserted antennae rostrum almost three times as long base, widened at apex. A key to genera of subtribe Geochina distribution map for species are given.

CURRENT SCIENCE, VOL. 88, NO. 12, 25 JUNE 2005 1897 It provides an important link in the evolution of insects. The morphological characters of the reported bug, such as small body, short antennae comprising three segments, three-segmented, backwardly directed rostrum with thorax being the largest among the three parts of the insect body, are not yet known in a living or fossil insect family. It...

A new interstitial copepod of the family Laophontidae was found in the samples from a sandy beach at Taean, west coast of Korea. This species was described and named as Quinquelaophonte koreana sp. nov. Present new species is clearly distinguishable from its congeners with the combined characters of the short caudal ramus and its short ornamented seta V, two setae on the antennary exopod, and s...

The septal area is an important anterior component of the limbic system. It is located on the medial surface of the cerebral hemisphere nestled inferior to the rostrum of the corpus callosum and anterior to the third ventricle and lamina terminalis (Fig 1) (1). This small area is contiguous with components of the limbic system curving around the corpus callosum (Fig 2) as well as structures on ...

Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) echolocation resolution greatly exceeds measured beampattern and conventional hearing model performance. We explore the idea that teeth might aid conventional hearing. Nerve conduction requires neural delay lines, a requisite that might be met by unexplained specialised cell arrangements already reported. Jawbone resonance displays selectivity at 25-35 de...

Gender differences in brain structure and function have long been an interest to neuroscientists. One region where these differences have been reported is in the band of white matter that connects the two cerebral hemisphere, the corpus callosum. The current study explores the possibility that differences in cognitive ability contribute to the observed gender effects. The focus here is on visuo...

Cranial material from a new genus (Ramphastosula) of Sulidae is described. The material comes from the Early–Lower Pliocene of the Pisco Formation of the central-southern coast of Peru. The skulls are characterized by (1) remarkable convex curvature of the dorsal surface and straight ventral surface of the rostrum, only with a curvature on the third anterior part and the tip of the bill; (2) we...

Arostropsis groehnigen. et sp. n. is described from Baltic amber and temporarily placed in the tribe Naupactini. It differs from all recent Naupactini genera with open corbels by very short and flattened scape, distinct lateral carina of the pronotum and elytra, and the rostrum distinctly narrower than the head capsule. The shape of head in the extinct genus is somewhat similar to that of the e...

In the aquatic environment, living organisms emit weak dipole electric fields, which spread in the surrounding water. Elasmobranchs detect these dipole electric fields with their highly sensitive electroreceptors, the ampullae of Lorenzini. Freshwater sawfish, Pristis microdon, and two species of shovelnose rays, Glaucostegus typus and Aptychotrema rostrata were tested for their reactions towar...
