We present a new and shorter proof of Stocking's result that any strongly irreducible Heegaard surface of a closed orientable triangulated 3– manifold is isotopic to an almost normal surface. We also reprove a result of Jaco and Rubinstein on normal spheres. Both proofs are based on the " reduction " technique introduced by the author.
We present a new proof of Reidemeister and Singer’s Theorem that any two Heegaard splittings of the same 3-manifold have a common stabilization. The proof leads to an upper bound on the minimal genus of a common stabilization in terms of the number of negative slope inflection points and type-two cusps in a Rubinstein-Scharlemann graphic for the two splittings.
A bargaining solution based on the Rubinstein–Safra–Thomson ‘ordinal Nash’ outcome is investigated in the Peters–Wakker ‘revealed group preferences’ framework. Assuming non-expected utility preferences, necessary and sufficient conditions are stated on preference pairs in order for the solution to be well-defined and axiomatized uniquely. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. 1 I thank Andreas Blume for helpful references and Eddie Dekel and Duane Seppi for numerous discussions which influenced the views expressed here. I apologize to Ariel Rubinstein for using (a permutation of) the title of his book for the title of this essay.
A ranking method assigns to every directed graph a (weak) ordering of the nodes. In this paper, we axiomatize the ranking method that ranks the nodes according to their outdegree. This method generalizes the ranking by Copeland score for tournaments as characterized in Rubinstein (SIAM J. Appl. Math. 38 (1980) 108–111). c © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Abstract In recent years a number of authors pointed out significant stability and convergence problems while using Cox-Ross-Rubinstein binomial method to price and hedge barrier options. Different modifications were suggested to improve the convergence and stability of the binomial method. However, as this article shows, lattice approach in general has limited stability factor when applied to ...
We prove bounds on the diiusion constant for the Rubinstein-Duke-model by means of a variational formula. The leading term decreases quadratically with the length of the polymer chain. The coeecient of proportionality agrees with the one for the model with periodic boundary conditions. The next leading term is anomalous. Upper and lower bounds on the corresponding scaling exponent are given.
The Rubinstein-Duke or repton model is one of the simplest lattice model of reptation for the diffusion of a polymer in a gel or a melt. Recently, a slightly modified model with hardcore interactions between the reptons has been introduced. The curvilinear diffusion coefficients of both models are exactly determined for all chain lengths. The case of periodic boundary conditions is also conside...
We give a proof of the so-called generalized Walderhausen conjecture, which says that an orientable irreducible atoroidal 3-manifold has only finitely many Heegaard splittings in each genus, up to isotopy. Jaco and Rubinstein have announced a proof of this conjecture using
