The endotracheal tube with a movable bronchial blocker, Univent tube, used to effect one-lung ventilation is easy to use in endotracheal intubation. However, problems are often encountered when inserting the blocker into the bronchus. We herein describe a method which enables the easy blind insertion of the blocker into the left or right bronchus. The techniques of inserting the blocker into th...

Background. Typical pulmonary carcinoids represent less than 5% of primary lung tumors. In patients with typical bronchial carcinoid, formal surgical resection still remains the gold-standard treatment. Data regarding long-term outcome in using flexible bronchoscope-based modalities under conscious sedation is very limited. Objectives. We sought to investigate, over extended follow-up period, t...

Necrotizing tracheobronchitis and acute airway obstruction from invasive mycosis developed in a patient who had undergone bone marrow transplantation. The infectious process obstructed the airway and disintegrated the walls of the right mainstem bronchus and pulmonary artery. The airway was cleared using rigid bronchoscopy to extract the detritus. The patient died of hemorrhage after rupture of...

An incidental string-like structure spanning the lumen of the intermediate bronchus was found during bronchoscopy in an 18-year-old woman. We consider that the lesion may be a rare fibrous anomaly of the bronchus and may be closely related to a bronchial web. We have named this unusual structure 'bronchial string'.

Intubation of the left main bronchus via a tracheostomy tube was performed in a patient with local recurrence of lung cancer associated with invasion and obstruction of the left main bronchus after right sleeve pneumonectomy. The result was satisfactory not only for preventing asphyxia, but also for maintaining the patency of the airway after extubation of the endotracheal tube.

Flexible suction catheters were passed through the endotracheal tubes of infants undergoing mechanical ventilation, just before chest radiographic examination for clinical purposes. With the head straight, 7 of 10 straight catheters entered the right main bronchus but with the head turned, 17 of 20 straight catheters and 19 of 20 curved tip catheters entered the contralateral bronchus.

There has been debate as to whether rudimentary meningocele is an atretic form of meningocele or results from growth of meningeal cells displac...

Anomalies of bronchial anatomy have been categorised as "displaced", when a normal bronchus arises from an abnormal site, and "supernumerary", when there is evidence that all normal bronchi are present, together with an additional bronchus.' In a 15-year period slightly more than 2500 bronchograms were made in the course of routine investigation of respiratory disease. Three bronchograms reveal...
