Motor neural networks and muscles produce identifiably common outputs, such as a trot or gallop, despite varations in intrinsic properties across individuals. New work shows that sensory input can induce the requisite decrease in across-individual variability even as it increases within-individual variability.

Sensory substitution has advanced remarkably over the past 35 years since first introduced to the scientific literature by Paul Bach-y-Rita. In this issue dedicated to his memory, we describe a collection of reviews that assess the current state of neuroscience research on sensory substitution, visual rehabilitation, and multisensory processes.

Experimental investigations of cue combination typically assume that individual cues provide noisy but unbiased sensory information about world properties. However, in numerous instances, including real-world settings, observers systematically misestimate properties of the world from sensory information. Two such instances are the estimation of shape from stereo and motion cues. Bias in single-...

The maturation and organization of the brain is essential for the progress of human development. A. Jean Ayres first proposed a model of human development in the 1960s that she termed “sensory integration” (SI). (1)(2) According to Ayres’ theory, SI occurs under the dynamic influenceof sensory inputs: gravitational, tactile, proprioceptive, vestibular, visual, and auditory sensations. This proc...

In everyday life we constantly perceive and discriminate between a large variety of sensory inputs, the vast majority of which consist of more than one modality. We performed two experiments to investigate whether chickens use the information present in multimodal signals. To test whether audiovisual stimuli are better detected than visual or acoustic stimuli alone, we first measured the detect...

Online control of movement requires complex integration of predictive central feedforward and peripheral sensory feedback signals. We studied the hand trajectories of human subjects pointing to visual targets that abruptly changed locations by different amounts and modeled the mechanism of rapid online correction using a dynamic model of a two-joint limb. Small unperceived and large detected ta...

Information from the different senses is seamlessly integrated by the brain in order to modify our behaviors and enrich our perceptions. It is only through the appropriate binding and integration of information from the different senses that a meaningful and accurate perceptual gestalt can be generated. Although a great deal is known about how such cross-modal interactions influence behavior an...
