Using gel filtration on Sephadex G-100 and column chromatography on CM-cellulose, fractions containing either endogenous acceptor of L-fucose or fucosyltransferase were obtained from human parotid saliva. Hydrolysis with mild acid followed by Smith degradation increased the fucosyltransferase activity of the fractions that contained endogeneous acceptor.

Chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex A-50 was applied to study the quantitative distribution of creatine kinase isoenzymes in extracts of human tissue obtained during surgery. The results are compared with those determined by an immunological method [Clin. Chim. Acta 58, 223 (1975)]. Conflicting results for some organs as reported by the two methods are probably attributable to postmortem autolysis.

The egg jelly of the starfish Asterias amurensis was separated into the fractions J1, J2, and J3 on a Sephadex G-100 column. The Jl fraction induced the acrosome reaction and J2 induced sperm agglutination. Chemical analysis and chromatography revealed that sperm agglutinin is similar to asterosaponin A.

A method is described for assessing thyroid status using Sephadex column chromatography of serum samples with added (125)I triiodothyronine. The method is simple and inexpensive. It gave a correct diagnostic result in 97% of 258 euthyroid, 90% of 80 hyperthyroid, 78% of 59 hypothyroid, and 67% of 50 euthyroid, ill patients. The principle of the method and its limitations are briefly discussed.
