Mean serum zinc and copper levels were measured in pediatric patients with idiopathic aplastic anemia. Zinc levels were significantly lower in patients compared to controls and correlated with severity of disease. Serum copper levels were significantly higher in patients. There was no correlation with severity of disease. Cu/Zn ratio also correlated with severity of disease.

Background and purpose: Copper (Cu) is an essential trace element. The toxic level of copper can catalyze the formation of free radicals which cause various diseases including kidney failure. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of purslane on kidney failure due to copper toxicity in rat model. Materials and Methods: Twenty-eight male Wistar rats were divided equally and rand...

Introduction Dyshomeostasis of essential trace elements including iron and copper plays a key role in the pathogenesis of a myriad of serious conditions including iron deficiency (ID) anemia, in which impaired cellular energy metabolism is prominent. Although experimental studies documented decreased activity of cytochrome c oxidase (CytOx) in ID, there are not enough clinical data. The present...

Ten cattle and 10 buffalo were divided into 2 groups (control [n = 8] and experimental [n = 12] that received daily administration of copper. Three hepatic biopsies and blood samples were performed on days 0, 45, and 105. The concentration of hepatic copper was determined by spectrophotometric atomic absorption, and the activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and gamma-glutamyl transfera...

BACKGROUND/AIM Some oligoelements are now investigated as possibly having a role in atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to compare the concentrations of copper and zinc in the serum and carotid plaque and parameters of lipid metabolism in patients with different morphology of carotid atherosclerotic plaque. METHODS Carotid endarterectomy due to the significant atherosclerotic stenosis ...

The Menkes copper ATPase (Atp7a) and metallothionein (Mt1a) are induced in the duodenum of iron-deficient rats, and serum and hepatic copper levels increase. Induction of a multi-copper ferroxidase (ceruloplasmin; Cp) has also been documented. These findings hint at an important role for Cu during iron deficiency. The intestinal divalent metal transporter 1 (Dmt1) is also induced during iron de...

Introduction: Gamma radiations have used frequently at medical radiation centers for treatment of different cancers. This study aimed to consider possible alterations in level of serum zinc and selenium among nuclear medicine staff. Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was carried out on 30 nuclear medicine staff and 10 individuals as control gr...

The major purpose of the present investigation was to study the effects of different concentrations of residual chlorine on serum iron related parameters in rats. Feeding male rats with water containing 80 ppm of residual chlorine daily for 5 days reduced serum levels of ceruloplasmin, copper, iron and hemoglobin by approximately 27%,23%,6% and 4%, respectively. Higher reductions in serum ...

Back ground: Gastric cancer is an important, prevalant and second most fatal cancer in the world. Previous studies show heavy metals have various roles in human health. Heavy metals are known to be associated with various cancers but their function in gastric adenocarcinoma is unclear. In this study we examined serum level of these metals in gastric adenocarcinoma patients compared to control g...
