Fractures around the acromion are a known complication of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. The literature provides limited data on the risk factors associated with this complication as well as the ultimate outcomes after nonoperative treatment. The goal of this study was to report clinical outcomes in patients with acromial fractures after nonoperatively treated reverse total shoulder arthr...

Pre-operative planning systems aid clinicians by giving insight into patient-specific issues before surgery is performed. The ability to perform a virtual shoulder replacement procedure enables the surgeon to explore the probable and plausible outcomes. Pre-operative planning software assists the surgeon in this complex decision-making

BACKGROUND Conventional stemmed anatomical shoulder prostheses are widely used in the treatment of glenohumeral osteoarthritis. The stemless shoulder prosthesis, in contrast, is a new concept, and fewer outcome studies are available. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to investigate the early functional outcome and postoperative proprioception of a stemless prosthesis in comparison with a ...

A patient developed sepsis syndrome with shock 7 h after an anaesthetic for a shoulder replacement. Tracheal intubation had been difficult and required the use of a stylet and gum-elastic bougies. A gastrografin swallow subsequently demonstrated an oesophageal perforation and mediastinitis was diagnosed at surgical exploration. She survived after a prolonged period of intensive care treatment.

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the quality of the adaptation procedures as well as the clinimetric testing of the shoulder disability questionnaires available in Portuguese that has occurred for each adaptation. METHODS Systematic literature searches on MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, SCIELO and LILACS were performed to identify relevant studies. Data on the quality of the cross-cultural adaptation procedur...

The reported rate of complications of reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) seems to be higher than the complication rate of anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty. The reported overall complication rate of primary RSA is approximately 15%; when RSA is used in the revision setting, the complication rate may approach 40%.The most common complications of RSA include instability, infection, notching,...

Scapular notching is a common complication after reverse shoulder arthroplasty and has been associated with poor clinical outcomes. Factors associated with notching include neck shaft angle and glenosphere position. The goal of this study was to evaluate the incidence of notching with an eccentric glenosphere that allows for inferior offset as well as its effect on clinical outcome. The charts ...

We report the long-term clinical and radiological outcomes of the Aequalis total shoulder replacement with a cemented all-polyethylene flat-back keeled glenoid component implanted for primary osteoarthritis between 1991 and 2003 in nine European centres. A total of 226 shoulders in 210 patients were retrospectively reviewed at a mean of 122.7 months (61 to 219) or at revision. Clinical outcome ...

This study was performed to review the safety and outcome of total shoulder replacements in patients who are > or = 80 years of age. A total of 50 total shoulder replacements in 44 patients at a mean age of 82 years (80 to 89) were studied. Their health and shoulder status, the operation and post-operative course were analysed, including pain, movement, patient satisfaction, medical and surgica...

HYPOTHESIS Supraspinatus deficiency associated with total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) provokes eccentric loading and may induce loosening of the glenoid component. A downward inclination of the glenoid component has been proposed to balance supraspinatus deficiency. METHODS This hypothesis was assessed by a numeric musculoskeletal model of the glenohumeral joint during active abduction. Three...
