he Thermosphere, Ionosphere, Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) mission is a low-cost NASA Sun-Earth Connections mission designed to provide a basic understanding of the least explored and least understood region of the Earth’s environment—the mesosphere, lower thermosphere, and ionosphere (MLTI). The MLTI region is located approximately 60 to 180 km above the surface and is a gateway b...

We have investigated the effects of precession in the inner jet of 3C 273 on its beaming properties and high energy emission. We have used all available VLBI data to determine the kinematic evolution of the jet. The position angles, velocities and formation epochs of different superluminal components are consistent with a precessing inner jet. The time-dependence of the Doppler factor for this ...

The authors describe and illustrate 6 factors that affect the size of a Pearson correlation: (a) the amount of variability in the data, (b) differences in the shapes of the 2 distributions, (c) lack of linearity, (d) the presence of 1 or more “outliers,” (e) characteristics of the sample, and (f) measurement error. Also discussed are ways to determine whether these factors are likely affecting ...

This paper discusses pronunciation research using a written questionnaire to ask people overt questions about their pronunciation. Several investigations that have used this approach are discussed. The technique is particularly useful for large-scale surveys of variability in lexical incidence or in the phonological system. It is unsuitable for surveying variability in phonetic realization.

We investigate the ability of three different crop models of varying complexity for capturing El Niño–Southern Oscillation-based climate variability impacts on the U.S. Corn Belt (1981–2010). Results indicate that crop models, irrespective of their complexity, are able to capture the impacts of climate variability on yield. Multiple-model ensemble analysis provides best results. There was no si...

The “ten-year rule” suggests that it takes about 10 years of preparation to reach “expert” status. How long does it take, however, for someone to reach a level of creative greatness? Through an analysis of 215 contemporary fiction writers, we found that these writers took an average of 10.6 years between their first publication and their best publication, although there was a high degree of var...

We propose a novel model of resource sharing schemes that provide each user with a xed minimum and a random extra amount of bandwidth and buuer. Allocations and prices are adjusted to adapt to resource availability and user demands. At equilibrium, if it exists, all users optimize their utility and resource demand equals supply, i.e., the marginal increase in user utility due to higher return o...
