This contribution considers the problem of transforming a regular matrix pair (A;B) to generalized Schur form. The focus is on blocked algorithms for the reduction process that typically includes two major steps. The rst is a two-stage reduction of a regular matrix pair (A;B) to condensed form (H;T ) using orthogonal transformations Q and Z such that H = QAZ is upper Hessenberg and T = QBZ is u...

The popularity of the Web has created a great marketplace for businesses to sell and showcase their products increasing the need for secure Web services such as SSL, TLS or SET. We propose a pseudorandom bit generator that can be used to create a stream cipher directly applicable to these secure systems; it is based on the powers of a block upper triangular matrix achieving great statistical re...

This paper presents a bijection between ascent sequences and upper triangular matrices whose non-negative entries are such that all rows and columns contain at least one non-zero entry. We show the equivalence of several natural statistics on these structures under this bijection and prove that some of these statistics are equidistributed. Several special classes of matrices are shown to have s...

2. Simultaneous similarity of tuples of matrices over C. Problem 1 is notoriously difficult. We show that for the local ring H0 this problem reduces to a Problem 2 for certain kind of matrices. We then discuss certain special cases of Problem 2 as simultaneous similarity of tuples of matrices to upper triangular and diagonal matrices. L-property of pairs of matrices, that discussed next, is clo...

A Banach space operator T ∈ B(X ) is polaroid if points λ ∈ isoσσ(T ) are poles of the resolvent of T . Let σa(T ), σw(T ), σaw(T ), σSF+(T ) and σSF−(T ) denote, respectively, the approximate point, the Weyl, the Weyl essential approximate, the upper semi–Fredholm and lower semi–Fredholm spectrum of T . For A, B and C ∈ B(X ), let MC denote the operator matrix (

Verardi’s construction of special groups of prime exponent is generalized, and put into a context that helps to decide isomorphism problems and to determine the full group of automorphisms (or at least the corresponding orbit decomposition). The groups in question may be interpreted as groups of unitriangular matrices over suitable rings. Finiteness is not assumed.

The space of upper triangular matrices with Hilbert{Schmidt norm can be viewed as a nite dimensional analogue of the Hardy space H2 of the unit disk when one introduces the adequate notion of \point" evaluation. A bitangential interpolation problem in this setting is studied. The description of all solution in terms of Beurling{Lax representation is given.

Let G be the group of n×n upper-triangular matrices with elements in a finite field and ones on the diagonal. This paper applies the character theory of Andre, Carter and Yan to analyze a natural random walk based on adding or subtracting a random row from the row above.
