A chromosomal locus of Salmonella typhimurium which complements S. typhimurium asr (anaerobic sulfite reduction) mutants and confers on Escherichia coli the ability to produce hydrogen sulfide from sulfite was recently cloned (C. J. Huang and E. L. Barrett, J. Bacteriol. 172:4100-4102, 1990). The DNA sequence and the transcription start site have been determined. Analysis of the sequence and ge...

In this demonstration, we show a qualitative analysis of sulfite ions in white wine with strontium ions. In base solution, a white precipitation occurs from strontium sulfite that disappears after a strong acid is added. This demonstration nicely illustrates chemical equilibrium in a school chemistry experiment.

Enzymes capable of catalyzing the hydroxylamine-dependent. oxidation of pyridine nucleotides have been studied in Salmonella typhimurium (1, 2), Escherichia coli (3-5), Bacillus subtilis (6, 7), Azotobacter agile (8, 9), Neurospora crassa (lo), and soybean leaves (11). Siegel, Click, and Monty (1) and Siegel and Monty (2) demonstrated that reduced triphosphopyridine nucleotide-specific hydroxyl...

approved: Alan T. Bakalinsky Sulfite mutants representing five complementation groups, previously derived from an ethyl methanesulfonate-treated haploid strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were studied. Although the wildtype 5. cerevisiae strain used (isogenic to X2180-1 A) had a basal tolerance for sulfite (7 |iM free H2SO3), the sensitive and resistant mutants were found to tolerate less than ...

Various enzymic systems, such as nitrite reductase, sulfite reductase and glutathione reductase, have been proposed for, or suspected to be involved in, the reduction of selenite in bacteria. As alphaproteobacteria have been shown to be highly tolerant to transition metal oxyanions, it seemed interesting to investigate the hypothetical involvement of these different enzymes in the reduction of ...

Hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis and dissimilatory sulfate reduction, two of the oldest energy conserving respiratory systems on Earth, apparently could not have evolved in the same host, as sulfite, an intermediate of sulfate reduction, inhibits methanogenesis. However, certain methanogenic archaea metabolize sulfite employing a deazaflavin cofactor (F(420))-dependent sulfite reductase (Fsr) wh...

Amines dissolved in ionic liquids react rapidly with SO(2) to produce new materials. Compounds related to the stepwise conversion of SO(2) to sulfite and sulfate salts have been isolated. Trapping SO(2) in the form of the sulfite anion does not change the oxidation state of sulfur and should maintain the reversibility of the capture system.

Analysis of variance was used to evaluate the simultaneous effects of strain, incubation temperature (15 to 25 degrees C), agitation time (0 to 24 h), and initial sulfite concentration (100 to 300 ppm) on glycerol production in grape juice by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Fourteen strains were studied to determine their growth patterns in the presence of sulfites and ethanol. Baker's yeast strains ...

Dissimilatory sulfate reduction serves as a key metabolic carbon remineralization process in anoxic marine environments. Sulfate reducing microorganisms can impart a wide range in mass-dependent sulfur isotopic fractionation. As such, the presence and relative activity of these organisms is identifiable from geological materials. By extension, sulfur isotope records are used to infer the redox ...

Sulfur dioxide (SO2), a typical gaseous compound found in the atmosphere, corrodes metals, particularly outdoors. When SO2 adsorbs on the surface electrolyte, it easily dissolves, resulting in the formation of protons (H+) and bisulfite ions (HSO3). The former reduces the pH of the surface electrolyte, which promotes metal dissolution. Silver and copper are commonly used in the electronic compo...
