Rhodococcus sp. strain ECRD-1 was evaluated for its ability to desulfurize a 232 to 343 degrees C middle-distillate (diesel range) fraction of Oregon basin (OB) crude oil. OB oil was provided as the sole source of sulfur in batch cultures, and the extent of desulfurization and the chemical fate of the residual sulfur in the oil after treatment were determined. Gas chromatography (GC), flame ion...

This paper considers the role of democracy in environmental quality and the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC). Some studies in the EKC literature have examined the extent to which democratic nations are more or less apt to have improving environmental conditions, but they have drawn from static measures of a nation’s current regime. In this paper we examine panel data from 1960 to 2001 and anal...

The electrochemical oxidation of R ~ ( b p y ) ~ ~ + and Fe(bpy)32+ in liquid sulfur dioxide was investigated. Ru(bpy),2+ shows two oxidation waves corresponding to the 3+ (1.01 V) and 4+ (2.76 V) forms while Fe(bpy),*+ undergoes three oxidations to the 3+ (0 .70 V), 4+ (2.92 V), and 5+ ( -3 .09 V) forms. While the 3+ form is stable. for both compounds on a coulometric time scale, the higher ox...

A weakly bonded SO2:H2O surface complex is found at the vapor/water interface prior to the reaction and dissolution of SO2 into the aqueous phase. The results have important implications for understanding the formation of atmospheric aerosols and understanding the atmospheric sulfur cycle.

1-Azafulvenium methides, generated from pyrrolo[1,2-c]thiazole-2,2-dioxides' thermal extrusion of sulfur dioxide, led to the synthesis of functionalized pyrroles. The intramolecular trapping of these transient 8pi 1,7-dipoles in pericyclic reactions, namely sigmatropic [1,8]H shifts and 1,7-electrocyclization, allowed the synthesis of N-vinylpyrroles and C-vinylpyrroles which, under flash vacuu...

Future global climate projections are subject to large uncertainties. Major sources of this uncertainty are projections of anthropogenic emissions. We evaluate the uncertainty in future anthropogenic emissions using a computable general equilibrium model of the world economy. Results are simulated through 2100 for carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFC...

Tunable laser absorption spectroscopy (TLAS) has been well accepted as a preferred measurement technique for many industrial applications in recent years, especially for in situ applications. Previously, mainly near-infrared lasers have been used in TLAS sensors. The advent of compact mid-infrared light sources, like quantum cascade lasers and interband cascade lasers, has made it possible to d...

Douglas firs (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) are suffering strongly from air pollution in western Europe. We studied the effect of low concentrations of ozone (200 micrograms per cubic meter during 3 days) and sulfur dioxide (53 micrograms per cubic meter during 28 days) on translocation of assimilates in 2 year old Douglas firs. The trees were exposed to the pollutants and afterward tra...
