We report a video-electroencephalogram study of a 50-year-old woman who developed a clinical picture consisting of stereotyped periodic eye opening followed by eye closing, with or without swallowing movements, after a prolonged cardiopulmonary arrest. These movements were associated with a burst-suppression pattern on the electroencephalogram. [Published with video sequences].
1. Several heart interneurons (HN cells) of the leech nerve cord have impulse-initiation sites in every segmental ganglion through which their single axons pass. All these initiation sites are capable of producing rhythmic impulse bursts. However, under normal conditions a dominant primary initiation site in the ganglion where the cell body is located suppresses the activity of the other second...
BACKGROUND The permutation entropy, the approximate entropy, and the index of consciousness are some of the most recently studied electroencephalogram-derived indexes. In this work, a thorough comparison of these indexes was performed using propofol anesthesia in a rabbit model. METHODS Six rabbits were anesthetized with three propofol infusion rates: 70, 100, and 130 mg · kg⁻¹ · h⁻¹, each ma...
HIGHLIGHTS ► Twelve entropy indices were systematically compared in monitoring depth of anesthesia and detecting burst suppression.► Renyi permutation entropy performed best in tracking EEG changes associated with different anesthesia states.► Approximate Entropy and Sample Entropy performed best in detecting burst suppression. OBJECTIVE Entropy algorithms have been widely used in analyzing E...
