The distally based sural fasciocutaneous flap has been proved an excellent option for coverage of the soft tissue defects of the lower third of the leg, ankle, and foot. In this article, we reported on a series of foot and ankle reconstructions with a distally based sural neurofasciocutaneous flap supplied by the terminal perforating branch of the peroneal artery. The vascular pedicle of the fl...

In order to elicit the usefulness of sural nerve biopsy we retrospectively evaluated the courses of disease of every patient, who underwent this procedure in our department between January 1995 and March 2000. Sixty seven patients with the suspected diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy could be included. From these chart reviews and patient questionings were done. Inflammatory-demyelinating neuro...

OBJECTIVE To study the quantitative and ultrastructural changes in myelinated nerve fibers and the basement membranes of the perineurial cells in diabetic nerves. METHODS The study was performed at the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, King Abdul-Aziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from 2003 to 2005. Human sural nerves were obtained from 15 lower limbs and 5 diabetic nerve biopsie...

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate whether tramadol had a dose-dependent blocking effect on nerve conduction when administered perineurally to the sural nerve of healthy volunteers. METHODS Twenty-four informed healthy subjects were randomized into four equal groups [Saline (placebo), 0.5% tramadol, 1% tramadol and 1.5% tramadol]. The study was designed to be double-blinded. ...

OBJECTIVE To describe a successful case of sural nerve cable grafting to the leg following a gunshot injury. CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION A 28-year-old man was shot at close range, sustaining extensive damage to the left popliteal fossa. Initial exploratory operation revealed a pierced sciatic nerve proximal to its bifurcation into the tibial and common peroneal branches. The 60% di...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is suggested to be associated with peripheral nerve damage. A case-control study was conducted to provide further support to this observation. In a longitudinal intervention study, it was examined whether treatment for OSA has a possible beneficial effect on peripheral nerve function. METHODS Participants were 23 patients with OSA and 23...

OBJECTIVES In this study we intended to find a correlation between hypertriglyceridemia and peripheral neuropathy (PN) in patients with a high triglyceride level and no neurological complaints. METHODS We recruited 24 patients (21 males and 3 females) having a triglyceride level above 300 mg/dl with no neurologic complaints and none of the other common causes of PN and they underwent an elect...

BACKGROUND Nerve conduction studies are an invaluable aid to investigate and quantify the physiological activity of peripheral nerves. These include measurement of sensory and motor conduction velocities and latencies of peripheral nerves. These nerve conduction parameters may be affected by anthropometric factors like age, sex, height, weight and BMI. In this observational study the impact of ...
