Large areas of land are needed to dispose of wastes produced by mining activities worldwide which poses a myriad of environmental hazards with regards to soil, water and air contamination. This is a problem, especially for a mining country like South Africa, where more than 1500 mines are registered which affects 0.2 million ha of land. Legislation in this country do, however, stipulate that di...

Mercury (Hg) release from inoperative Hg mines in the California Coast Range has been documented, but little is known about the release and transport mechanisms. In this study, tailings from Hg mines located in different geologic settings--New Idria (NI), a Si-carbonate Hg deposit, and Sulphur Bank (SB), a hot-spring Hg deposit--were characterized, and particle release from these wastes was stu...

Abstract This study takes lead-zinc flotation tailings as the research object. The process of “tailings regrinding-lead-zinc mixed floatation-activation zinc separation” is used to comprehensively recover valuable metal elements from original tailings. results show that grinding fineness -74 μm under condition m accounts for 82%; recovery rates lead and in concentrate obtained open-circuit test...

Waste materials from mining tailings, often contain significant amounts of potentially valuable minerals. This study aimed at unearthing the minerals in Ijero Ekiti mine tailings. The tailing samples were randomly collected five locations area. analyzed for selected physico-chemical parameters: pH values, electrical conductivity, chloride, organic matter and X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRF...

Toxic metalliferous mine-tailings pose a significant health risk to ecosystems and neighboring communities from wind and water dispersion of particulates containing high concentrations of toxic metal(loid)s (e.g., Pb, As, Zn). Tailings are particularly vulnerable to erosion before vegetative cover can be reestablished, i.e., decades or longer in semi-arid environments without intervention. Meta...

An arsenic resistance genomic island in the bacterium Klebsiella michiganensis 3T412C was isolated from mine tailings from Peru. This genomic island confers adaptation to extreme environments with high concentrations of arsenic. Isolate 3T412C contained a complete set of genes involved in resistance to arsenic. This operon is surrounded by putative genes for resistance to other heavy metals.

The recycling of mineral tailings is an important research topic. In this work, composite material was prepared using vanadium titanomagnetite (VTM) tailings, kaolin and sodium silicate, used as a photocatalyst for photocatalytic degradation organic dyes. results showed that the has good performance on rhodamine B in solution within few minutes. synthesized materials were characterized by XRF, ...

Several coastal rocky shores in northern Chile have been affected by the discharges of copper mine tailings. The present study aims to analyze the chemical speciation of heavy metals in relation to the diversity of sessile species in the rocky intertidal benthic community on the northern Chilean coast, which is influenced by the presence of copper mine tailings. In particular, the chemical form...

Large areas of mine tailings are reclaimed by applying organic amendments such as paper mill sludge (PMS). Although mining industries can use PMS freshly generated by paper mills, operational constraints on paper industries make temporary landfilling of this material an unavoidable alternative for the paper industries, creating the most prominent PMS source for mining industries. This study aim...

We present data of the time-evolution of a remediation approach on a marine shore tailings deposit by the implementation of an artificial wetland. Two remediation cells were constructed: one in the northern area at sea-level and one in the central delta area (above sea-level) of the tailings. At the beginning, the “sea-level” remediation cell had a low pH (3.1), with high concentrations of diss...
