A terbium complex has been designed that may be used to sensitise formation of singlet oxygen (phi(em) 12%), allowing the creation of a ratiometric sensory system for pO(2) (versus the insensitive Eu analogue) and the definition of a reactive probe that can be used to cause local damage to cells loaded with the complex and exposed to laser excitation.

We describe a novel tunable optical filter for use in optical-frequency-domain multiplexed communication systems. The shift in the Bragg condition of a fiber Bragg grating as a result of magnetically induced circular birefringence is calculated with coupled-mode theory on the basis of circular states of polarization, and the values obtained for silica and terbium-doped optical fibers are compared.

We discovered that positively charged terbium complexes bearing 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane functionalized with amide ligands are highly sensitive to dynamic luminescence quenching by NAD(P)H. We exploited this phenomenon to establish a general time-resolved luminescence-based assay platform for sensitive detection of NAD(P)H-dependent enzyme activities.

The helicity of the (SSS)-Delta enantiomer of a terbium and europium(III) complex is inverted on reversible binding to 'drug site II' of serum albumin, signalled by a switch in its circularly polarised emission; no such behaviour occurs with the (RRR)-Lambda complexes, thereby defining a unique chiroptical probe of albumin binding.

A terbium probe for the selective time-gated detection of hydroxyl radical is presented. This probe demonstrates high sensitivity with an 11.0-fold increase in time-gated luminescence intensity for an hour-long exposure to hydroxyl radical concentration in the femtomolar range, and high selectivity for HO* over other reactive oxygen species.
