Recent progress in experiment on quantum tunnelling of the magnetic moment in mesoscopic systems will be reviewed. The emphasis will be made on measurements of individual nanoparticles. These nanomagnets allow one to test the border between classical and quantum behaviour. Using the micro-SQUID magnetometer, waiting time, switching "eld and telegraph noise measurements show unambiguously that t...

The Institute for Beam Physics and Technology (IBPT) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and Babcock Noell GmbH (BNG) are collaborating since several years on an R&D program on superconducting undulators (SCUs). At the moment the collaboration is focusing on a SCU with 20 mm period length (SCU20) for ANKA, the test facility and synchrotron radiation source, run by the IBPT. The 1.5 ...

An eecient method for evaluating the error probability of optical ASK/DD systems subject to interferometric noise is presented. The receiver decision variable is statistically described by its moment generating function (mgf). The theoretical results, obtained with the aid of the new derived mgf, are in good agreement with experiment, employing directly modulated light sources, while the common...

Azulene, a 10-π-electron isomer of naphthalene, is a nonbenzenoid bicyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with a beautiful blue color and a large dipole moment. We present here the first class of azulene-based aromatic diimides, 2,2'-biazulene-1,1',3,3'-tetracarboxylic diimides (BAzDIs), which comprise a 2,2'-biazulene moiety and two seven-membered imide groups. DFT calculations, thermal, optical and ele...

Azulene, a 10-p-electron isomer of naphthalene, is a nonbenzenoid bicyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with a beautiful blue color and a large dipole moment. We present here the first class of azulene-based aromatic diimides, 2,20-biazulene-1,10,3,30-tetracarboxylic diimides (BAzDIs), which comprise a 2,20biazulene moiety and two seven-membered imide groups. DFT calculations, thermal, optical and elec...

A novel heteronuclear 3d-4f compound having formula NdCu3L3·13H2O (where H3L = Schiff base derived from 5-bromosalicylaldehyde and glycylglycine and L 3– = C11H8N2O4Br) was obtained. It was characterized by elemental and thermal analyses and magnetic measurements. The Cu(II)–Nd(III) compound is stable up to 323 K. During dehydration process the water molecules are lost in two stages. The magnet...

We report the coexistence of ferromagnetic order and superconductivity in UCoGe at ambient pressure. Magnetization measurements show that UCoGe is a weak ferromagnet with a Curie temperature T(C)=3 K and a small ordered moment m(0)=0.03 micro(B). Superconductivity is observed with a resistive transition temperature T(s)=0.8 K for the best sample. Thermal-expansion and specific-heat measurements...

Dielectrophoresis is an electronic analogue1,2 of optical tweezers3 based on the same physical principle: an ac electric field induces a dipole moment on an object in solution, which then experiences a force proportional to the gradient of the field intensity. For both types of tweezers, this force must compete with thermal Brownian4 motion to be effective, which becomes increasingly difficult ...

We propose a model that provides a unified description of nuclear equation of state and fragmentations. The equation of state is evaluated in BraggWilliams as well as in Bethe-Peierls approximations and compared with that in the mean field theory with Skyrme interactions. The model shows a liquidgas type phase transition. The nuclear fragment distributions are studied for different densities at...

Gas bubbles in water act as oscillators with a natural frequency inversely proportional to their radius and a quality factor determined by thermal, radiation, and viscous losses. The linear dynamics of spherical bubbles are well understood, but the excitation mechanism leading to sound production at the moment of bubble creation has been the subject of speculation. Experiments and models presen...
