Soil samples from 31 locations in the Una river spring catchment were subject to chemical extraction analyses. The data were presented as distribution maps of potentially toxic elements (Al, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn) in the surface soil of the area. To evaluate the vulnerability of the immediate spring zone of the karst catchment, the vulnerability map was derived from the application of the PI method...

The recent determination of the baryon-to-photon ratio from WMAP data by Spergel et al. (2003) allows one to fix with unprecedented precision the primordial abundances of the light elements D, He, He and Li in the framework of the standard model of big bang nucleosynthesis. We adopt these primordial abundances and discuss the implications for Galactic chemical evolution, stellar evolution and n...

Twenty-six chemical elements and oxidative status were determined in serum of 12 patients with first demyelinating episode and brain magnetic resonance imaging compatible with the disease at different time points. Quantifications of Al, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Si, Sn, Sr, V, Tl, W, Zn and Zr, as well as of serum oxidative status and antioxidant capaci...

The distributions and concentrations of trace elements in the environment exposed to biological materials including humans can affect life depending on the exposure and degree of concentrations. Whilst the essential trace elements impacts on human development the potential toxic elements will have adverse health consequences on humans and in animals. As observed from the study both lives threat...

Trace elements mean elements present at low concentrations (mg kg-1 or less) in agroecosystems. Some trace elements, including copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), molybdenum (Mo), and boron (B) are essential to plant growth and are called micronutrients. Except for B, these elements are also heavy metals, and are toxic to plants at high concentrations. Some trace elements, such a...

Early LiCoO2 research provided the basis for tremendous commercial success of Li+ batteries since their invention in early 1990s. Today, LiNiMnCoO2 (Li-NMC) is one most widely used rapidly evolving electronic vehicle industry. Li-NMC continue to receive significant interest as efforts aim partially, or entirely, replace use scarcely available and toxic Co with elemental doping form binary, tern...

cannabis is one of the most banned drugs in the world. cannabinoid-induced dependence or withdrawal signs are indicated by the result of complex molecular mechanisms including upstream protein kinases (pks), such as an extracellular signal regulated kinase1/2 (erk1/2) and downstream glycogen synthase kinase-3β (gsk-3β), which lead to neuronal plasticity. in this study, we examined the protectiv...

High signal to noise ratio spectra have been obtained with the GECKO spectrograph at CFHT, at a spectral resolution of 100 000, for three metal-poor stars in order to obtain more accurate abundances of the very fragile element 6 Li. For two newly observed stars, BD +42 2667 and BD +36 2165 it appears that the first may have a detectable amount of 6 Li, whereas no 6 Li is found in the second one...

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is responsible for the toxic effects of environmental pollutants such as dioxin, but little is known about its normal physiological functions. Li et al. (2011) now show that specific dietary compounds present in cruciferous vegetables act through the AhR to promote intestinal immune function, revealing AhR as a critical link between diet and immunity.
