Pasteurized donor human milk is provided by milk banks to very preterm babies where their maternal supply is insufficient or unavailable. Donor milk is currently processed by Holder pasteurization, producing a microbiologically safe product but significantly reducing immunoprotective components. Ultraviolet-C (UV-C) irradiation at 254 nm is being investigated as an alternative treatment method ...

The current technological status of ultraviolet light emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) has reached a point where small-scale ultraviolet (UV) water disinfection applications, that is, for greywater reuse appear increasingly promising. This study compares the germicidal and economical aspects of UV-LEDs with traditional UV. Pure cultures and environmental greywater samples were exposed to different rad...

The effectiveness of two major UV technologies against a highly prevalent species of Mycobacterium avium complex was investigated. Our study indicates that M. avium is much more resistant to UV irradiation than most waterborne pathogens and that it is one of the rare microorganisms that are highly resistant to both chemical and UV disinfection in water.

DNA repair and survival of pathogenic E. coli O157:H7 was investigated following exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from both low-pressure (LP) and medium-pressure (MP) lamps. This study included irradiation at UV doses used in drinking water treatment and lower doses indicative of potential treatment problems. Immediately following UV exposure, an average log inactivation of 4.5 or greater...

the photocatalytic activity of nano-tio2 has been used in inactivation of microorganisms, mainly in the form of suspension in a liquid or partially in an immobilized system. using advanced oxidation processasa new approach has been used in the purification of water and wastewater. in this research, the systems of suspended (0.1 g/l) and immobilized nano-tio2 in the cement bed (0.1-2%) under a 1...

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has brought to light the role of environmental hygiene in controlling transmission. Healthcare facilities are hot spots for infectious pathogens where physical distancing and personal protective equipment (PPE) not always sufficient prevent need consider adjunct strategies transmission pathogens. In combination with current infection contro...

The main objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness ultraviolet light (UV-C) emitting diodes for decontamination stainless steel food contact surfaces. Listeria monocytogenes (ATCC 19115), Escherichia coli 25922), and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium 700720) were chosen as challenge microorganisms. Target microorganisms subjected UV-C dosages 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 mJ cm −2 at a...

Far UV-C, informally defined as electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between 200 and 230 nm, has characteristics that are well-suited to control of airborne pathogens. Specifically, UV-C been shown be highly effective for inactivation pathogens; yet this same minimal potential cause damage human skin eye tissues. Critically, unlike UV-B, does not substantially penetrate the dead cell laye...

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of pulsed ultra-violet (UV) irradiation on inactivation of beer spoilage microorganisms. UV irradiation is nowadays cost effective enough to compete with traditional biological, physical, and chemical treatment technologies and has become an alternative to such methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS Photoinactivation effects of pulsed UV l...

Plant innate immunity to pathogenic microorganisms is activated in response to recognition of extracellular or intracellular pathogen molecules by transmembrane receptors or resistance proteins, respectively. The defense signaling pathways share components with those involved in plant responses to UV radiation, which can induce expression of plant genes important for pathogen resistance. Such i...
