A measles outbreak of 151 cases in a circumscribed rural community is documented. Attention is drawn to accuracy of vaccination documentation and the factors influencing uptake. The efficacy of the vaccine in the population of school children is estimated (both within the community at large and within the home of an affected person). A failure rate of 5-6 per cent was found.

Vaccination with heat shock protein 60 (Hsp60) from Histoplasma capsulatum induces a protective immune response in mice. We explored the cellular and molecular requirements for the efficacy of recombinant Hsp60 in mice. Depletion of CD4(+), but not CD8(+), cells during the inductive phase of vaccination abolished protection, as assessed by survival and by the fungal burden in lungs and spleens....

BACKGROUND Infection rates for many infectious diseases have declined over the past century. This has created a cohort effect, whereby older individuals experienced a higher infection rate in their past than younger individuals do now. As a result, age-stratified seroprevalence profiles often differ from what would be expected from constant infection rates. METHODS Here, we account for the co...

abstract prevention of infectious diseases by immunization in children has markedly diminished the morbidity and mortality of once common contagious diseases in many countries worldwide. immunization programs have led to the global eradication of smallpox, elimination of measles and poliomyelitis in regions of the world, and substantial reduction in the morbidity and mortality attributed to dip...

This paper examines farmers’ trust in badger vaccination as a method of preventing the spread of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) between wildlife (specifically badgers) and cattle in England. The spread of bTB has economic and social implications for farmers, but previous research has found that lack of trust in Government is a key factor in farmers’ failure to adopt new preventative biosecurity prac...

Since 2000, there has been a legal requirement in the UK that dogs and cats should have an effective rabies vaccination with demonstrable sero-conversion if their owners wish to avoid quarantine on re-entry to the UK. In 2002, 10,483 rabies titres were determined on dogs at the VLA. Statistical analyses assessed the efficacy of each vaccine within different dog breeds. Animal size, age, breed, ...

Three porcine circovirus-2 strains were isolated from pigs on a Brazilian farm during an outbreak, indicating a vaccine failure. They present identical genomic sequences, with high identities to other isolates that were also related to vaccination failures, supporting the recent theory about an antigen drift being associated with vaccine failures throughout the world.

During March to May 2006 the highest incidence of measles in New South Wales since 1998 provided an opportunity to estimate the effectiveness of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination program in preventing childhood measles, and describe any differences in clinical presentation between vaccinated and unvaccinated children. We reviewed records of all 33 notified cases of measles in children...

Behavior-incidence models have been used to model phenomena such as free-riding vaccinating behavior, where nonvaccinators free ride on herd immunity generated by vaccinators. Here, we develop and analyze a simulation model of voluntary ring vaccination on an evolving social contact network. Individuals make vaccination decisions by examining their expected payoffs, which are influenced by the ...
