Dynamically typed languages are becoming increasingly popular for different software development scenarios where runtime adaptability is important. Therefore, existing class-based platforms such as Java and .NET have been gradually incorporating dynamic features to support the execution of these languages. The implementations of dynamic languages on these platforms commonly generate an extra la...
TokyoTech Virtual Machine Builder (VMB) is a generator of virtual machines. VMB takes a formal specification of a virtual machine and generates implementation of the virtual machine. A specification of a virtual machine comprises configuration of virtual hardware (a set of virtual registers, virtual stacks, and heap organization) and definition of virtual machine instruction set. Behavior of ea...
Determining how many virtual machines a Linux host could run can be a challenge. One of tough missions is to find the balance among performance, density and usability. Now KVM hypervisor has become the most popular open source full virtualization solution. It supports several ways of running guests with more memory than host really has. Due to large differences between minimum and maximum guest...
In a virtualized cloud cluster, frequent snapshot backup of virtual disks improves hosting reliability; however, it takes significant memory resource to detect and remove duplicated content blocks among snapshots. This paper presents a low-cost deduplication solution scalable for a large number of virtual machines. The key idea is to separate duplicate detection from the actual storage backup i...
We introduce Satori, an efficient and effective system for sharing memory in virtualised systems. Satori uses enlightenments in guest operating systems to detect sharing opportunities and manage the surplus memory that results from sharing. Our approach has three key benefits over existing systems: it is more able to detect short-lived sharing opportunities, it is efficient and incurs negligibl...
We study probabilistic on-line simulators for several machine models (or memory structures). The simulators have a more constrained access to data than the virtual machines, but are allowed to use probabilistic means to improve average access time. We show that in many cases coin tosses can not make up for inadequate access.
Virtualization is a fundamental part of cloud computing, especially in delivering Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). Exploring different techniques and architectures of the virtualization helps us understand the basic knowledge of virtualization and the server consolidation in the cloud with x86 architecture. This paper describes virtualization technologies, architectures and optimizations reg...
This paper describes a portable implementation of the Graph Reduction in Parallel (GRIP) software, built on the Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) process control system. Using this system, it is easy for anyone to “get a GRIP” without needing to invest in special-purpose hardware. An important contribution of this paper is its detailed description of GRIP’s Intelligent Memory Unit (IMU) software.
In this paper we present a method for fast simulation of stuck-at and coupling memory faults using a virtual machine simulating an IBM compatible PC/AT. Four experiments were accomplished to evaluate this approach. Results show that this method is feasible.
This report gives a high level overview of the Erlang Runtime System (ERTS) and the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), comparing the two in terms of overall architecture, memory layout, parallelism/concurrency and runtime optimisations. More specifically I’ll look at the HotSpot JVM provided by Oracle and the default BEAM implementation open sourced by Ericsson.
