The manganese-containing superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) is a major component of the cellular defence mechanisms against the toxic effects of the superoxide radical. Within the framework of studies on anti-oxidant enzymes and their protective role in the human parasitic nematode Onchocerca volvulus, sequences encoding the MnSOD were isolated and examined in this study. Degenerate primers were desi...
The chapter dealing with intestinal volvulus in standard medical and surgical textbooks is invariably prefaced with a reference to the high incidence of volvulus of the sigmoid colon in east European, Russian, or Nordic countries at the turn of the century. This idea has so often been repeated that it has become an accepted surgical-pathological truth. The evidence, in fact, is based on relativ...
INTRODUCTION Gastric volvulus is an uncommon clinical condition and is associated with type ii-iii hiatal hernias. Its acute presentation constitutes a surgical emergency. Despite its low frequency, results of laparoscopic treatment have already been published. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective study was performed on all cases diagnosed with gastric volvulus undergoing laparoscopic surgery...
Colonic obstruction due to sigmoid colon volvulus during pregnancy is a rare but complication with significant maternal and fetal mortality. We describe a case of sigmoid volvulus in a patient with 33 weeks of gestation that developed complete necrosis of the left colon. Case. 27-year-old woman was admitted with 3 days of abdominal distention, vomit, and the stoppage of the passage of gases and...
INTRODUCTION Gastric volvulus is an uncommon clinical entity, first described by Berti in 1866. It is a rotation of all or part of the stomach through more than 180 degrees . This rotation can occur on the longitudinal (organo-axial) or transverse (mesentero-axial) axis. This condition can lead to a closed-loop obstruction or strangulation. Traditional surgical therapy for gastric volvulus is b...
BACKGROUND/AIMS Although multiple treatment options exist for the management of sigmoid colon volvulus, no study has examined the factors associated with successful endoscopic detorsion. This study aimed to examine the clinical course of patients with sigmoid colon volvulus and to identify factors related to successful endoscopic detorsion. METHODS This study included 30 cases (21 patients) o...
Association of gastric volvulus with agenesis of the left lobe of the liver is very rare and mostly reported in adults. We report a case of gastric volvulus associated with agenesis of the left lobe of the liver in a child, which was successfully treated by laparoscopic gastropexy.
Gastric bypass patients are at risk for small-bowel obstruction secondary to adhesions, internal hernias, intussusception and volvulus. Most gastric bypass patients do not present with classic obstructive symptoms. We present a rare case of concurrent intussusception and volvulus in a woman with previous history of internal hernia following laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery.
Endosymbiotic Wolbachia bacteria that infect the filarial nematode Onchocerca volvulus were previously found to have an essential role in the pathogenesis of river blindness. The current study demonstrates that corneal inflammation induced by Wolbachia or O. volvulus antigens containing Wolbachia is completely dependent on expression of myeloid differentiation factor 88.
We report eventration of right hemi-diaphragm resulting in gastric volvulus of the right sided stomach in an infant. The diagnosis of this rare association was made with contrast CT scan. Patient was initially managed with reduction of stomach, plication of right hemi diaphragm, anterior gastropexy and Ladds procedure, but required re-laparotomy after two months for recurrent volvulus.
