We have used high-resolution transmission electron microscopy to resolve the @0001# projected basal plane structure and chirality relationships in boron nitride nanotubes. Evidence for tube growth along both ^101̄0& and ^112̄0& is found. Our results suggest that the ^112̄0& ~armchair! tubes form first. Subsequent growth can take the form of a ^101̄0& ~zig-zag! tube or additional armchair tubes. In ...

Adsorption of a boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) was examined toward ethylacetylene (C4H6) molecule by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G (d) level, and it was found that the adsorption energy (Ead) of ethylacetylene the pristine nanotubes is about -1.60kcal/mol. But when nanotube has been doped with Si and Al atoms, the adsorption energy of ethylacetylene molecu...

Scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy provides access to super-resolution spectroscopic imaging of the surfaces of a variety of materials and nanostructures. In addition to chemical identification, it enables observations of nano-optical phenomena, such as mid-infrared plasmons in graphene and phonon polaritons in boron nitride. Despite the high lateral spatial resolution, scat...

We apply first-principles calculations to study the electronic structure of boron nitride nanocones with disclinations of different angles θ = nπ/3. Nanocones with odd values of n present antiphase boundaries that cause a reduction of the work function of the nanocones, relative to the bulk BN value, by as much as 2 eV. In contrast, nanocones with even values of n do not have such defects and p...

In this Letter, we perform an experimental study of ionic transport and current fluctuations inside individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The conductance exhibits a power law behavior at low salinity, with an exponent close to 1/3 versus the salt concentration in this regime. This behavior is rationalized in terms of a salinity dependent surface charge, which is accounted for on the basis of a mo...

The insulator characteristic of hexagonal boron nitride limits its applications in microelectronics. In this paper, the fluorinated hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets were prepared by doping fluorine into the boron nitride nanosheets exfoliated from the bulk boron nitride in isopropanol via a facile chemical solution method with fluoboric acid; interestingly, these boron nitride nanosheets demo...

In this study interaction of phenothiazine sulfur dye with (5, 5) armchair open-end boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) in interaction (with a length of 7 Å) was investigated. The impacts of the estereoelectronic effect associated with donor-acceptor electron delocalizations, dipole-dipole interactions and total steric exchange energies on the structural and electronic properties and reactivity of ...
