The need for the temporal alignment of gait cycle data is well known; however, there is little consensus concerning which alignment method to use. In this paper, we discuss the pros and cons of some methods commonly applied to temporally align gait cycle data (normalization to percent gait cycle, dynamic time warping, derivative dynamic time warping, and piecewise alignment methods). In additio...

Vocal tract warping functions for normalizing vocal tract transfer functions of seven male subjects were calculated based on a vocal tract deformation method based on the vocal tract length sensitivity function. Vocal tract area functions for the five Japanese vowels of six subjects were tuned for their first four formant frequencies to be close to those of a target subject. The vocal tract war...

We study the electronic band structure of monolayer graphene when Rashba spin-orbit coupling is present. We show that if the Rashba spin-orbit coupling is stronger than the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, the low-energy bands undergo trigonal-warping deformation and that for energies smaller than the Lifshitz energy, the Fermi circle breaks up into separate parts. The effect is very similar to w...

The peculiar nature of topological surface states, such as absence of backscattering, weak anti-localization, and quantum anomalous Hall effect, has been demonstrated mainly in bulk and film of topological insulator (TI), using surface sensitive probes and bulk transport probes. However, it is equally important and experimentally challenging to confine massless Dirac fermions with nano-steps on...

In recent years, there has been an interest in automating the process of producing maps of the motion of ice floes from SAR images acquired a few days apart. A common approach is to correlate raw pixel values in order to find corresponding features in two images. The problem with this approach is that the search space is often prohibitive when ice floes rotate, as they frequently do. We present...

The shift from traditional energy systems to distributed systems of energy suppliers and consumers and the power volatileness in renewable energy imply the need for e↵ective short-term prediction models. These machine learning models are based on measured sensor information. In practice, sensors might fail for several reasons. The prediction models cannot naturally cannot work properly with inc...

This paper presents a new method for warping of diffusion tensor fields. The proper reorientation of a tensor field requires knowledge of the underlying fiber orientation, which is not known a priori. Accordingly, a probabilistic representation of the fiber direction is adopted and used in a Procrustean estimation of the rotational component of the warping field. The estimated rotational compon...

From 18.04.04 to 23.04.04, the Dagstuhl Seminar 04172 Perspectives Workshop: Visualization and Image Processing of Tensor Fields was held in the International Conference and Research Center (IBFI), Schloss Dagstuhl. During the seminar, several participants presented their current research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of the presentations given during the seminar...

We present a novel family of continuous linear time-frequency transforms adapted to a multitude of (nonlinear) frequency scales. Similar to classical time-frequency or time-scale representations, the representation coefficients are obtained as inner products with the elements of a continuously indexed family of time-frequency atoms. These atoms are obtained from a single prototype function, by ...
