A new type of hybrid ring coupler (or rat-race coupler) the gap-waveguide ring hybrid has been developed in this work. The advantages of the new gap-waveguide ring hybrid are low manufacturing cost since the good electrical contact between metal plates is not required, and lower transmission loss compared to microstrip line since there is no dielectric material needed. Therefore, the gap-wavegu...

We theoretically investigate the possible increase of the second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency in silicon compatible waveguides by considering an asymmetrical plasmonic slot waveguide geometry and a χ((2)) nonlinear polymer infiltrating the slot. The needed phase matching condition is satisfied between the fundamental waveguide mode at the fundamental frequency (FF) and second-order wave...

An optimal design for an extra-low loss buried waveguide Y-branch splitter is presented over a broadband wavelength range from 1500~1600 nm. A tapered multimode waveguide section, earlier used to reduce the excess loss, is optimized when the light distribution at the end of the multimode waveguide section is matched to the profile of the symmetric supermode for the structure of the two branchin...

Excellent progress in the development of Submillimeter-wave SIS and HEBmixers has been demonstrated in recent years. At frequencies below 800 GHz these mixers are typically implemented using waveguide techniques, while above 800 GHz quasi-optical (open structure) methods are often used. In many instances though, the use of waveguide components offers certain advantages. For example, broadband c...

Novel conical reflection of light by a thick three-layered metal-clad optical waveguide is observed. A symmetrical metal-cladding optical waveguide is used, which exhibits extraordinary conical reflection during free-space coupling of light to the waveguide. The phenomenon is attributed to the leakage of excited ultrahigh-order guided modes and their inter- and intramode coupling interaction.

Theoretically it was determined that changing longitudinal rigidity of waveguide the longitudinal vibrations amplitudes are increasing. The cross-section of waveguide is decreasing from the generating point towards its free end. Experimental results show that the free end of the waveguide is influenced by longitudinal vibrations only, which could be used for blood vessels cleaning.

A plasmonic slot waveguide excited by evanescent wave coupling of a silicon strip waveguide is studied to be used as a label-free biosensor. The plasmonic slot waveguide enables strong electric-field enhancement in a small volume inducing higher interaction between the light and the analyte. In this paper, we have given the scalar modes and discussed the coupling characteristics of an eight-port waveguide coupler consisting of four parallel single-mode waveguides. The analysis is based on a rectangular waveguide model which has been known to give accurate results in the case of two waveguide directional couplers. A classification of its various scalar modes is also given.

We show that the main guiding mechanisms in dielectric-core photonic crystal optical waveguides are total internal reflection and distributed Bragg reflection. We also show that by placing a slab of semiconductor material between two photonic band gap ~PBG! mirrors, we can obtain waveguide modes at frequencies out of the photonic bandgap. These modes are similar to the modes of a conventional d...

Phase matching in a multilayer AlGaAs waveguide is used to generate mid-IR (7.5-8.5 μm) light through difference frequency generation (DFG) between a 1550 nm pump and 1950 nm signal. This represents the longest wavelength generated through DFG in a 2D waveguide mode in a semiconductor waveguide. It was produced with an efficiency of 1.2×10(-4) %/W in a 1 mm long sample. The process is shown to ...
