Background: Distracted walking is a major cause of pedestrian fatalities. Along with the expansion and popularity of mobile phones, their impacts on pedestrian safety, especially when crossing urban intersections have attracted a lot of attention. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of mobile-phone use on pedestrians’ crossing behavior when passing signalized intersections. Ma...

4 We recall that a book with k pages consists of a straight line (the spine) and k half5 planes (the pages), such that the boundary of each page is the spine. If a graph is drawn 6 on a book with k pages in such a way that the vertices lie on the spine, and each edge 7 is contained in a page, the result is a k-page book drawing (or simply a k-page drawing). 8 The pagenumber of a graph G is the ...

Let Pm Pn be the strong product of two paths Pm and Pn. In 2013, Klešč et al. conjectured that the crossing number of Pm Pn is equal to (m − 1)(n − 1) − 4 for m ≥ 4 and n ≥ 4. In this paper we show that the above conjecture is true except when m = 4 and n = 4, and that the crossing number of P4 P4 is four.

For noise-robust automatic speech recognition (ASR), we propose a novel voice activity detection (VAD) method based on a combination of multiple features. The scheme uses a weighted combination of four conventional VAD features: amplitude level, zero crossing rate, spectral information, and Gaussian mixture model (GMM) likelihood. The weights for combination are adaptively updated using minimum...

We investigate four different privacy-sensitive features, namely energy, zero crossing rate, spectral flatness, and kurtosis, for speech detection in multiparty conversations. We liken this scenario to a meeting room and define our datasets and annotations accordingly. The temporal context of these features is modeled. With no temporal context, energy is the best performing single feature. But ...

For a zero-mean Gaussian process, the covariances of zero crossings can be expressed as the sum of quadrivariate normal orthant probabilities. In this paper, we demonstrate the evaluation of zero crossing covariances using one-dimensional integrals. Furthermore, we provide asymptotics of zero crossing covariances for large time lags and derive bounds and approximations. Based on these results, ...
