A vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) housed at quarantine of Razi vaccine and serum research institute died following a few days of sickness. Multiple abscesses on the surface and inside the liver and enlargement of spleen with pinpoint white spot were the most prominent macroscopic features. We examined the organs of the dead monkey and Yersinia enterocolitica was isolated. In histopatho...

The inhibition of the growth of Yersinia enterocolitica by other gram-negative bacteria in mixed cultures at 32 degrees C was not the consequence of a depletion in essential nutrients, an unfavorable change in pH or oxygen tension or the production of toxic metabolic products. The inability of Y. enterocolitica to attain its potential maximum population in mixed cultures appeared instead to res...

Successful establishment of Yersinia infections requires the type III machinery, a protein transporter that injects virulence factors (Yops) into macrophages. It is reported here that the Yersinia type III pathway responds to environmental signals by transporting proteins to distinct locations. Yersinia enterocolitica cells sense an increase in extracellular amino acids (glutamate, glutamine, a...

The chromosomal gene yst, which encodes a heat-stable enterotoxin of Yersinia enterocolitica, is a useful diagnostic marker because it occurs only in invasive strains of this species. A homologous gene also occurs in some strains of Yersinia kristensenii. Sequence analysis of the yst genes from two different strains of Y. enterocolitica and from Y. kristensenii revealed a substantial number of ...

Patients with yersinia triggered reactive arthritis were double blind randomly allocated to receive treatment with ciprofloxacin 500 mg twice daily orally or placebo during three months. The diagnosis was made by serology (specific IgA and IgG antibodies to yersinia outer membrane proteins (yops)), positive culture, and/or demonstration of Yersinia enterocolitica antigen in colon biopsy specime...

We report a case of reactive arthritis (ReA) triggered by Yersinia enterocolitica enteritis. A 24-year-old Japanese man developed polyarthritis in the lower limbs. Two weeks prior to these symptoms, he noted diarrhea, right lower abdominal pain and a fever. Y. enterocolitica was not isolated from a stool culture; however, he was diagnosed with ReA based on the colonoscopic findings of a high an...

Using 21 antimicrobial agents, agar dilution susceptibility tests were carried out against 190 strains of Yersinia enterocolitica. Isolates from human, environmental, and animal sources had essentially equal susceptibility patterns.

We show that the expression of a Yersinia enterocolitica O:8 pYV-encoded type III secretion system was altered in a rough mutant (YeO8-R) due to elevated levels of FlhDC. H-NS might underlie flhDC upregulation in YeO8-R, and the data suggest a relationship between the absence of O antigen and the expression of H-NS.
