With the substrate DNP-α-GalNAc (2,4-dinitrophenyl-N-acetyl-α-d-galactosaminide) three α-N-acetylgalactosaminidase-like activities could be distinguished in serum, in addition to the classical lysosomal enzyme (Naga, EC 3.2.1.49, pH optimum at 4). Two activities had optima in the pH 5 to 6 region and one peaked around pH 8. Like the Naga activity at pH 4, the activity at pH 8 was detectable und...

Land use change is fundamentally a product of the interaction of physical land characteristics, economic considerations and agricultural and environmental policies. Researchers are increasingly combining physical and socio-economic spatial data to investigate the drivers of land-use change in relation to policy and economic developments. Focusing on Ireland, this study develops a panel data set...

Sensitivity analysis is an indispensable tool for studying the robustness and fragility properties of biochemical reaction systems as well as for designing optimal approaches for selective perturbation and intervention. Deterministic sensitivity analysis techniques, using derivatives of the system response, have been extensively used in the literature. However, these techniques suffer from seve...

LINE-1 (L1) insertions comprise as much as 17% of the human genome sequence, and similar proportions have been recorded for other mammalian species. Given the established role of L1 retrotransposons in shaping mammalian genomes, it becomes an important task to track and annotate the sources of this activity: full length elements, able to encode the cis and trans acting components of the retrotr...

We address a surprising result in a previous study of speed discrimination with multiple moving gratings: discrimination thresholds decreased when the number of stimuli was increased, but remained unchanged when the area of a single stimulus was increased [Verghese & Stone (1995). Vision Research, 35, 2811-2823]. In this study, we manipulated the spatial- and phase relationship between multiple...

A bounded-degree-1 set S in an undirected graph G = (V,E) is a vertex subset such that the maximum degree of G[S] is at most one. Given a graph G, the Maximum Bounded-Degree1 Set problem is to find a bounded-degree-1 set S of maximum size in G. A notion related to bounded-degree sets is that of an s-plex used to define the cohesiveness of subgraphs in social networks. An s-plex S in a graph G =...

OBJECTIVE Allergic rhinitis has been frequently associated with both acute and chronic sinusitis. Previous studies have shown an influx of eosinophils into the maxillary sinus after nasal challenge with allergen. The objective of this study was to determine, in humans, if the development of seasonal allergic inflammation, secondary to natural allergen exposure, leads to similar inflammation wit...

We consider a variation of the subset selection problem in ranking and selection, where motivated by recently developed global optimization approaches applied to simulation optimization, our objective is to identify the top-m out of k designs based on simulated output. Using the optimal computing budget framework, we formulate the problem as that of maximizing the probability of correctly selec...
