Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the leading cause of bacterial pneumonia, sepsis and meningitis among neonates and a cause of morbidity among pregnant women and immunocompromised adults. GBS epithelial cell invasion is associated with expression of alpha C protein (ACP). Loss of ACP expression results in a decrease in GBS internalization and translocation across human cervical epithelial cells (...

We present preliminary results of several analyses searching for the effects of CP violation and mixing in the decay ofD0 mesons. We find no evidence of CP asymmetry in five different two-body decay modes of the D0 to pairs of light pseudo-scalar mesons: ACP (K +K−) = (+0.05±2.18±0.84)%, ACP (π+π−) = (+2.0±3.2±0.8)%, ACP (K0 Sπ) = (+0.1±1.3)%, ACP (π0π0) = (+0.1±4.8)% and ACP (K 0 SK 0 S) = (−2...

BACKGROUND Early and repeated patient-provider conversations about advance care planning (ACP) are now widely recommended. We sought to characterize barriers and strategies for realizing an iterative model of ACP patient-provider communication. METHODS A total of 2 multidisciplinary focus groups and 3 semistructured interviews with 20 providers at a large Veterans Affairs medical center. Them...

The acyl carrier protein (ACP) requires posttranslational modification with a 4'-phosphopantetheine arm for activity, and this thiol-terminated modification carries cargo between enzymes in ACP-dependent metabolic pathways. We show that acyl-ACP synthetases (AasSs) from different organisms are able to load even, odd, and unnatural fatty acids onto E. coli ACP in vitro. Vibrio harveyi AasS not o...

In this article, we tackle the automatic algorithm configuration problem (ACP), finding the best configuration of an algorithm such that some measure of its performance is optimized. We study the mesh adaptive direct search (MADS) method for the ACP. MADS is an iterative algorithm for global optimization. It does not require any infomation of the evaluation function, therefore the ACP can be re...

Anaplastic carcinoma of the pancreas (ACP) is a rare neoplasm of the pancreas. ACPs are aggressive neoplasms with a poorer prognosis than poorly differentiated ductal adenocarcinomas of the pancreas. The 3-year survival rate of patients with ACP is less than 3%, with a life expectancy of 10 to 20 months. We describe here a 64-year-old man with ACP mimicking a submucosal gastric tumor. The patie...

background: some studies have shown that casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (cpp-acp) and acidulated phosphate fluoride (apf) gel can protect teeth against erosion. the aim of this study was to assess whether cpp-acp and fluoride could reduce enamel wear rates under erosive conditions simulating abrasion and acidic diet regimen. materials and methods: enamel specimens consisted o...

The diagnosis of a primary vasculitic syndrome is dependent on documentation of vasculitis and the exclusion of diseases that can cause secondary vasculitis. The diagnosis of a specific primary vasculitic disorder depends on the pattern of organ involvement, the histopathology, and the size of affected blood vessels. The major determinants of prognosis and therapy include the type of vasculitis...

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of death and disability in young adults in the United States; the total national cost of TBI is more than $39 billion a year. Elucidation of the pathophysiology of brain injury is an important challenge for physicians who care for TBI patients. Equally important are prevention and a better scientific understanding of recovery and rehabilitation....
