We have demonstrated both rise and fall times below 1 s with 10%–90% modulation in a silicon-on-insulator thermooptical Mach–Zehnder switch. The switch is based on 9m-thick and 10m-wide single-mode rib waveguides. Very fast switching was achieved by using a differential control method. The switch was driven with a digital signal processor accompanied by simple electronic circuitry.

We present theoretical and experimental results for compact slanted gratings for vertical coupling between single-mode fiber and InP–InGaAsP waveguides. The maximum calculated coupling efficiency is 59%. We have measured a coupling efficiency of 16% for a 10m-long slanted grating.

We investigate the existence of 3-designs and uniform large sets of 3-designs with block size 6 admitting PSL(2, q) as an automorphism group. We show the existence of simple 3-(28, 6, 10m) designs for 1 ≤ m ≤ 230. Most of these designs were previously unknown.

The EXPLORE Project is a series of searches for transiting extra-solar planets using large-format mosaic CCD cameras on 4-m class telescopes. Radial velocity follow-up is done on transiting planet candidates with 8–10m class telescopes. Using a modification of the Zel’dovich approximation adapted to hot dark matter, the accretion of such matter onto moving cosmic string loops is studied. It is shown that a large number of 10M⊙ nonlinear objects will be produced by a redshift of z = 4. A fluorogenic chemosensing system is described and shown to selectively detect pyrophosphate under physiological conditions.
