Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was applied to all unique serotype 6C and 6D isolates and a random selection of serotype 6B and 6A isolates from nasopharyngeal swabs from Fijian children enrolled in a recent vaccine trial. The results suggest that Fijian serotype 6D has arisen independently from both serotypes 6A/C and 6B.

A series of new 1-[(2, 3-dichloroanilinomalonyl)]-3-(N-2’-cyanoethyl-N-2, 3-dichloroanilino)-5phenyl pyrazoline have been synthesized in 48 to 77% yield, by the reaction of N-cinnamoyl-N-2’cyanoethyl-2, 3-dichloroaniline with Ethyl-2-(2,3-dichloroanilido) acetohydrazide. Pyrazolines are yellow, cream and brown color solids, having high melting points. Identity of these products has been establi...

The results of deep long-slit optical spectroscopy for a sample of eight 6C radio galaxies at redshift z ∼ 1 are presented. Emission line ratios are derived for many emission lines with rest–frame wavelengths of 1500 − 4500Å and the kinematic properties of the emission line gas are derived from an analysis of the two dimensional structure of the [OII]3727Å emission line at ≈ 5Å spectral resolut...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Previous studies have shown that contractile endothelin type B (ETB) receptors are upregulated in cerebral arteries after experimental focal cerebral ischemia. The aim of this study was to examine the upregulation of contractile ETB receptors in cerebral arteries after organ culture and to elucidate the intracellular pathways involved. METHODS Rat middle cerebral arteri...

Calprotectin (CP) is an abundant metal-chelating protein involved in host defense, and the ability of human CP to bind Fe(ii) in a calcium-dependent manner was recently discovered. In the present study, near-infrared magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy is employed to investigate the nature of Fe(ii) coordination at the two transition-metal-binding sites of CP that are a His3Asp motif (site...

The photo-induced reaction of Mn2(CO)10 with the olefinic phosphane P(C7H7)3 (1; [P] if coordinated to a metal) leads stepwise to the axially substituted derivatives ax-{Mn2(CO)9[P]} (2) and ax,ax-{Mn2(CO)8[P]2} (3). Oxidative cleavage of 3 by halogens gives cis-{Mn(X)(CO)4[P]} (X = Cl (4a), Br (4b), I (4c)), whereas oxidation of 3 with NOBF4 provides a route to the salt {Mn(CO)4[P]}BF4 (5) whi...

OBJECTIVES In homeopathy, it is claimed that more homeopathically-diluted potencies render more protective/curative effects against any disease condition. Potentized forms of Condurango are used successfully to treat digestive problems, as well as esophageal and stomach cancers. However, the comparative efficacies of Condurango 6C and 30C, one diluted below and one above Avogadro's limit (lacki...

Cysteine-rich peptides (CRPs) play important host-defense roles in plants. However, information concerning CRPs in the Cactaceae (cactus) family is limited, with only a single cactus-derived CRP described to date. Here, we report the identification of 15 novel CRPs with three different precursor architectures, bleogens pB1-15 from Pereskia bleo of the Cactaceae family. By combining proteomic an...

OBJECTIVE Transplant arteriosclerosis (TA) restricts long-term survival of heart transplant recipients. Although the role of monocyte/macrophages is well established in native atherosclerosis, it has been studied to a much lesser extent in TA. Plasma cholesterol is the most important non-immunologic risk factor for development of TA but the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. We hypothes...
