In this work we introduce a new a posteriori error estimate of hierarchical type for the advection-diffusion-reaction equation. We prove the equivalence between the energy norm of the error and our error estimate using an auxiliary linear problem for the residual and an easy way to prove inf–sup condition.

We give a brief overview of stabilized finite element methods and illustrate the developments applied to the advection–diffusion equation. This article presents a concise perspective of the developments emanated from the works started in the 1980s through today. 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the present study, an advection-diffusion problem has been considered for the numerical solution. The continuum equation is discretized using both upwind and centered scheme. The linear system is solved using the ILU preconditioned BiCGSTAB method. Both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary condition has been considered. The obtained results have been compared for different cases.

This paper presents boundary observer design for space and time dependent reaction-advection-diffusion equations using backstepping method. The method uses only a single measurement at the boundary of the systems. The existence of the observer kernel equation is proved using the method of successive approximation.

Advection has been the standard transport mechanism in flow visualization. Diffusion, in contrast, has not been considered important in visual flow field analysis so far, although it is inherent to many physical processes. We present a novel technique that allows for interactive 3D visualization of both advection and diffusion in unsteady fluid flow. We extend texture-based flow visualization, ...

A discrete agent-based model on a periodic lattice of arbitrary dimension is considered. Agents move to nearest-neighbor sites by a motility mechanism accounting for general interactions, which may include volume exclusion. The partial differential equation describing the average occupancy of the agent population is derived systematically. A diffusion equation arises for all types of interactio...

Abstract. In this paper, we propose a general framework for designing numerical schemes that have both well-balanced (WB) and asymptotic preserving (AP) properties, for various kinds of kinetic models. We are interested in two different parameter regimes, 1) When the ratio between the mean free path and the characteristic macroscopic length ε tends to zero, the density can be described by (adve...

Abstract. We consider the problem of optimal mixing control. Our objective is to best enhance mixing by flow advection while the flow is optimized in the sense that it is almost steady and is of the least magnitude and the least rotation. For this we define a mixing efficiency functional by penalizing the average of variance of a diffusive scalar, the average of the flow, and the average of its...

We present a review of the semi-Lagrangian method for advection-diffusion and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations discretized with high-order methods. In particular, we compare the strong form where the departure points are computed directly via backwards integration with the auxiliary form where an auxiliary advection equation is solved instead; the latter is also referred to as Operator In...

Operator splitting time discretization techniques are getting more and more popular for the numerical simulation of non-linear problems in porous media. The main idea is to split complex operators in evolution equations into simpler ones which are successively solved in each time step. For porous media flow a natural splitting is given by the diffusive and the advective part of the flux. Then f...
