Gene inactivation and complementation experiments showed that the tripartite AheABC efflux pump of Aeromonas hydrophila extruded at least 13 substrates, including nine antibiotics. The use of phenylalanine-arginine-beta-naphthylamide (PAbetaN) revealed an additional system(s) contributing to intrinsic resistance. This is the first analysis of the role of multidrug efflux systems in Aeromonas spp.
Bacterial virulence can only be assessed by confronting bacteria with a host. Here, we present a new simple assay to evaluate Aeromonas virulence, making use of Dictyostelium amoebae as an alternative host model. This assay can be modulated to assess virulence of very different Aeromonas species.
The N terminus of the Aeromonas salmonicida ADP-ribosylating toxin AexT displays in vitro GTPase-activating protein (GAP) activity for Rac1, CDC42, and RhoA. HeLa cells transfected with the AexT N terminus exhibit rounding and actin disordering. We propose that the Aeromonas salmonicida AexT toxin is a novel member of the growing family of bacterial RhoGAPs.
BACKGROUND Aeromonas species can cause a wide spectrum of illnesses varying from intestinal to extra intestinal and vary in their susceptibility to different antibiotics. The current study was undertaken to characterize the third generation cephalosporin-resistant strains of Aeromonas spp. which were isolated from stool specimens. METHODS Out of a total of 2780 stool samples, 29 Aeromonas spp...
A collection of 116 motile Pseudomonas spp. and 92 Aeromonas spp. isolated from 15 Vietnamese intensive catfish farms was analyzed to examine the molecular antibiotic resistance characteristics and the transferability of resistance markers within and between species. High levels of resistance to ampicillin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, nalidixic acid, chloramphenicol, and nitrofurantoin were ...
Previous DNA hybridization studies established 12 Aeromonas genospecies, from which nine phenotypic species have been proposed: Aeromonas hydrophila, A. sobria, A. caviae, A. media, A. veronii, A. schubertii, A. salmonicida, A. eucrenophila, and A. jandaei. We have delineated a new Aeromonas genospecies, A. trota, on the basis of 13 strains isolated primarily from fecal specimens from southern ...
Fifty-four motile Aeromonas strains, composing the three currently recognizable species, were tested for susceptibility to cephalothin by broth dilution and disk agar diffusion assays. Cephalothin susceptibility was significantly associated with Aeromonas sobria (P less than 0.001) and may be an additional phenotypic marker useful in the identification of this species.
Sulfonamide-trimethoprim-resistant Aeromonas salmonicida and motile Aeromonas spp. from diseased fish of the GERM-Vet study carried the sul1 gene together with mostly cassette-borne trimethoprim resistance genes, including the novel gene dfrA28. The seven dfrA and dfrB genes identified were located mostly in class 1 integrons which commonly harbored other gene cassettes.
Gram-negative bacilli of the genus Aeromonas are primarily inhabitants of the aquatic environment. Humans acquire this organism from a wide range of food and water sources as well as during aquatic recreational activities. In the present study, the diversity and distribution of Aeromonas species from freshwater lakes in Malaysia was investigated using glycerophospholipid-cholesterol acyltransfe...
PURPOSE The genus Aeromonas is a pathogen that is well known to cause severe clinical illnesses, ranging from gastroenteritis to sepsis. Accurate identification of A. hydrophila, A. caviae, and A. veronii is important for the care of patients. However, species identification remains difficult using conventional methods. The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of different methods of i...
