Cell-free particulate fractions derived from methylotrophic bacteria catalyze the oxygen- and reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-dependent epoxidation of alkenes and hydroxylation of alkanes. Evidence presented indicates that the hydroxylation and epoxidation reactions are catalyzed by the same or a similar metal-containing monooxygenase.

Solved crystal structures of P450 BM3 variants in complex with styrene provide on the molecular level a first explanation of how a positively charged surface residue inverts the enantiopreference of styrene epoxidation. The obtained insights into productive and non-productive styrene binding modes deepened our understanding of enantioselective epoxidation with P450 BM3.

A hypervalent iodine mediated alkene difunctionalization reaction of vinylphenols has been developed. The chemistry is applicable to a wide range of substitutions on both the alkene and nucleophile substrates, enabling the rapid synthesis of 3-substituted indoles and 2-substituted indolizines in good yields and high diastereoselectivities under metal-free conditions.
