The Phrase Detectives Game-With-A-Purpose for anaphoric annotation has been live since December 2008, collecting over 2.5 million judgments on the anaphoric expressions in texts in two languages (English and Italian) from around 9,000 players. In this paper we summarize our recent work on creating a corpus using these annotations.

This paper discusses a French-English corpus annotated and aligned at anaphoric level. It also presents an annotation scheme based on the study of a detailed corpus featuring different types of correspondences and mismatches. The scheme which is adapted from EAGLES recommendations, supports the alignment at anaphoric level and caters for the different kinds of mismatches.

We report the results of a study of the reliability of anaphoric annotation which (i) involved a substantial number of naive subjects, (ii) used Krippendorff’s α instead of K to measure agreement, as recently proposed by Passonneau, and (iii) allowed annotators to mark anaphoric expressions as ambiguous.
