An MT-sulfone group was converted to a trifluoromethyl group by treatment with IF(5) after an alkylation reaction. Therefore, an MT-sulfone anion can be used as a trifluoromethyl anion equivalent. The formal asymmetric Michael-addition of a trifluoromethyl anion to crotonaldehyde was also performed.

Pyridinium and imidazolium bis-cations are shown to link calix[4]pyrrole anion complexes both in solution and in the solid state. This is accomplished by binding of the bis-cations to the electron-rich bowl shaped cavities formed by two separate calixpyrrole-anion complexes. These resulting sandwich-type structures provide a new way of organising calix[4]pyrrole anion complexes in space.

A ferrocene functionalised redox-active [3]rotaxane which contains two interlocked anion recognition sites has been prepared by chloride anion templation. With chloride two equivalents of anion are bound, one in each of the interlocked cavities, while sulfate forms a 1:1 stoichimetric sandwich type complex; the rotaxane can also electrochemically sense the two anions in acetonitrile.

In the crystal of the title mol-ecular salt, C(8)H(6)F(3)N(2) (+)·HSO(4) (-), cation-to-anion N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds generate [100] chains. Anion-to-anion O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds generate [001] helices and cross-link the chains into a three-dimensional network.
