Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, auto-immune multi-system disorder. About seventy to ninety percent of all cases of SLE occur in women. Although the disease is common in black young women residing in Europe and North America, it is reputed to be a very rare diagnosis in West Africa. A case of atypical presentation of SLE in a male in West Africa is presented.
Hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS) is a clinicopathologic entity characterized by increased proliferation and activation of benign macrophages with hemophagocytosis throughout the reticuloendothelial system. HPS may be primary, or secondary to malignancy, infections, auto-immune diseases and pharmacotherapy. In patients with adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD), HPS is a rare but life-threatening comp...
Mucous membrane pemphigoid is a chronic inflammatory, bullous subepithelial auto-immune disease, with predominant involvement of the mucosal surfaces. Oral mucous membrane pemphigoid occurring in childhood is extremely rare. We describe a new case of this entity occurring in a 4-year-old girl who presented with desquamative gingivitis. Diagnosis was based on clinical presentation, histopatholog...
Auto-reactive cells-mediated immune responses are responsible for the current tissue damages during autoimmunity. Accordingly, functional modulation of auto-reactive cells has been a pivotal aim in many of recent studies. In the current study, we investigated the possibility for insertion of regulatory molecules onto auto-reactive cells through exosomal nano-shuttles as a novel approach for phe...
Introduction Systemic onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA) is an acquired auto-inflammatory disease characterized by systemic inflammation and innate immune activation reflected in uncontrolled production of cytokines such as IL-1, IL-6 and IL-18. In sJIA, NK cell function is severely hampered despite high levels of IL-18. We recently found that defective phosphorylation of the IL-18 rece...
Specificity, antibody isotype distribution and levels of natural antibodies (NAb) may be potential informative parameters for immune mediated natural disease resistance, immune modulation, and maintenance of physiological homeostasis. A large proportion of mammalian NAb have affinity for or are directed against self-antigens; so called natural auto antibodies (N(A)Ab). In the present study we s...
Increased ambient temperature is inhibitory to plant immunity including auto-immunity. SNC1-dependent auto-immunity is, for example, fully suppressed at 28°C. We found that the Arabidopsis sumoylation mutant siz1 displays SNC1-dependent auto-immunity at 22°C but also at 28°C, which was EDS1 dependent at both temperatures. This siz1 auto-immune phenotype provided enhanced resistance to Pseudomon...
Background: Alopecia areata (AA) is an immune-mediated form of hair loss that affects all ages and both sexes.Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) esterase enzyme has lipophilic antioxidant power; it one the endogenousfree-radical-scavenging systems in human body. This work was to detect serum PON1 level patients withalopecia areata. Methods: 60 subjects, 30 AA controls. Full history, general local clinical exa...
Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is characterized by a major deregulation of the immune system. Hypergammaglobulinemia, auto-antibodies, and immunodepression are cardinal features. Parasitemia occurs in waves due to the successive appearance of parasites with different variable glycoprotein surface antigens (VGSA). Antigenic variation enables parasites to elude the host's immune defenses. Al...
Exposure to compounds of beryllium can cause dermatitis, acute pneumonitis and chronic pulmonary granulomatosis ("berylliosis") in humans. These syndromes seem to have an allergic-immunologic component in common. Hypersensitivity to beryllium is of the delayed (cell-mediated) type and can be measured as skin reactivity to patch test; lymphocyte blast transformation; and macrophage migration inh...
