The molecular fingerprints of 1,349 isolates of Mycobacterium bovis received between 1979 and August 2000 at Agence Française de Sécurité Sanitaire des Aliments (Afssa) have been obtained by spoligotyping. The majority of the isolates (1,266) were obtained from cattle living in France. An apparently high level of heterogeneity was observed between isolates. One hundred sixty-one spoligotypes we...

Western blot analysis showed that the 46-kilodalton (kDa) dimeric protein antigen secreted in large amounts by some daughter strains of Mycobacterium bovis BCG corresponded to protein MPB70 present in long-term culture filtrates of the Japanese substrain. The 46/23-kDa antigen is the most abundant protein in supernatant from a 5-day culture but is masked by leaked products in old culture supern...

Tuberculosis is rising in the developing world due to poor health care, human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infection, and the low protective efficacy of the Mycobacterium bovis BCG vaccine. A new vaccination strategy that could protect adults in the developing world from tuberculosis could have a huge impact on public health. We show that BCG boosted by poxviruses expressing antigen 85A induce...

Introduction: In tuberculosis (TB) endemic regions BCG vaccine is administered at birth in an effort to protect against neonatal tuberculous meningitis. However, this live vaccine facilitates overwhelming systemic infections by otherwise innocuous organisms in infants with cellular primary immunodeficiencies . Case Report: Our case is a seven month old infant who developed abscess at BCG vaccin...

Here, we present the draft genome sequence of ITALIC! Mycobacterium bovisBCG S4-Jena, a tuberculosis vaccine strain. The genome of S4-Jena is represented by 48 scaffolds, consisting of 132 scaffolded contigs and amounting to a size of about 4.2 Mb. New genes potentially encoding a phage fragment were identified in the genome.

When Mycobacterium bovis BCG and Staphylococcus aureus were plated on agar containing increasing concentrations of fluoroquinolone, colony numbers exhibited a sharp drop, followed by a plateau and a second sharp drop. The plateau region correlated with the presence of first-step resistant mutants. Mutants were not recovered at concentrations above those required for the second sharp drop, there...

A substantial change has taken place in recent years in the approach to the prevention of leprosy through antituberculosis vaccination. Since 1939 efforts have been made to start trials of BCG vaccine on humans as a prophylactic measure against malign leprosy. The third Pan-American Conference on Leprosy held in Buenos Aires in 1951, in connection with a subject of its agenda, "Actual Status of...

Mycobacterium bovis BCG is one of the most commonly administered vaccines. Complications, including disseminated BCG disease, are rare but increasingly reported in immunodeficient children. There is growing recognition of the importance of differences between BCG vaccine strains. We determined the susceptibilities of five genetically distinct BCG vaccine strains to 12 antituberculous drugs.

The attenuated BCG strain of Mycobacterium bovis is widely used as a vaccine against tuberculosis. However, in rare cases, it can be pathogenic to humans. Here, we report the first draft of a whole-genome sequence of a multidrug-resistant clinical isolate of M. bovis BCG.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB), infects one-third of the world’s population. While most infected individuals develop latent TB, 5–10% of infected individuals develop active TB. In addition, although most infected people with latent TB remain asymptomatic, they have approximately 10% lifetime risk of developing into active TB. This results in approxima...
