Discursive knowledge emerges as codification in flows of communication. The flows of communication are constrained and enabled by networks of communications as their historical manifestations at each moment of time. New publications modify the existing networks by changing the distributions of attributes and relations in document sets, while the networks are self-referentially updated along tra...

Virtual worlds (VW) have paved a new and important channel for workplace collaborations. However, analysts have noted that several organizations that made a strong entrance into using VW as a nouveau channel for communication and collaboration are stepping back due to limited user response. Motivated by this fact, we propose a trust-theoretic ‘virtual world model’ for communication and collabor...

A novel framework based on conditional emission densities for hidden Markov models (HMMs) is proposed in this contribution to integrate speech enhancement systems with automatic speech recognition systems. In the training phase, the observed feature vectors, corrupted by background noise and reverberation, together with estimates for the interference as provided by the speech enhancement system...

In fiber-optic communications, evaluation of mutual information (MI) is still an open issue due to the unavailability of an exact and mathematically tractable channel model. Traditionally, lower bounds on MI are computed by approximating the (original) channel with an auxiliary forward channel. In this paper, lower bounds are computed using an auxiliary backward channel, which has not been prev...

One obtains in this paper a process algebra RCCS, in the style of CCS, where processes can backtrack. Backtrack, just as plain forward computation, is seen as a synchronization and incurs no additional cost on the communication structure. It is shown that, given a past, a computation step can be taken back if and only if it leads to a causally equivalent past.

Transfiction is a system allowing the exploration and the realisation of concepts involving multiple places, both physical and virtual, and multiple media channels (visual, audio...) for enhancing the human-to-human communication. The human variable is back in the loop of complex Mixed Reality systems design and is positioned at the core of the narrative through the participation of users as “i...

The majority of today’s complex development and consulting projects involve various locations and distributed project organisation. One part of the project team usually works at the customer’s location in order to analyse requirements, specify system functionality, or present project results. Another, smaller part of the team is located in the »back office«, supporting the other workers. In dev...

Acquired brain injury (ABI) is one of the greatest causes of death and disability among children in Canada. Following ABI, children are required to transition back to school and adapt to the physical, cognitive, behavioral, social, and emotional demands of the school environment. We conducted a qualitative systematic review of students' and parents' experiences of the transition back to school ...
